While it is easy to find vegetarian-friendly places all over Kolkata, uncovering food joints that serve vegan-friendly dishes is a bit challenging. That’s why we went ahead and scavenged the city to curate a list of vegan-friendly places to hit up with your friends next time you’re eating out. Added bonus? They’re quite affordable.

Ubuntu Community

Founded by two environment activists, Ubuntu Community is the city's first 100 per cent vegan cafe located inside a narrow lane off Dhakuria. They've got Sahi Vada (dahi vada, silly!) made with peanut milk. The buns of their mini burgers are made using beetroot and spinach with a soya and a wheat patty between served with their in-house dip. From healthy smoothie bowls and black coffee to burgers, home-baked pizza, pasta, the traditional kosha mangsho and desserts, Ubuntu offers it all.

The Flaming Bowl

Located on Harish Mukherjee Road (bang opposite Azad Hind Dhaba and walking distance from Balwant Singh Eating House), The Flaming Bowl serves food influenced by nine countries across Asia. Almost half the menu is vegan—go for the Thai Dragon Noodles, Phad Stew or Moon Fan Rice besides the several other options available. Also, there are several dishes on the menu that can be made vegan. Definitely try the Floating Dim Sum in Thai Green Curry or Yakitori Sauce.

Sienna Cafe

Located in Hindustan Park, Sienna Cafe is a small yet cosy eatery that also serves amazing vegan food. Choose from a sumptuous selection of salads, mains and beverages. You can substitute your regular milk with almond milk for coffee and tea. They've also got vegan desserts on offer. Sienna can also make a vegan preparation for specific dishes. Watch out for the Sienna Specials that they come up with every week. You cannot miss it!

The Daily

From hummus platters to salads, The Daily offers cruelty-free food options as well. Health freaks can try the Keen-Waah salad made of quinoa, red cabbage, cherry tomatoes, olives, leaves, lemon dressing and fresh herbs. There's a Warm Granary salad too as well as Baba Toast. For desserts, they've got berry cakes made using vegan almond milk and whipped cream. The menu also includes dishes that can be prepared the vegan way. Check with the staff before you place your order.

Burma Burma

This Burmese restaurant will leave you spoilt for choice with their wide selection of vegan food. Soup, salad, starters, small plates, mains, curries, and desserts - all of them have vegan options. We loved the Grilled Mock Meat Skewers and the Burmese Falafel. The Trumpet Mushroom Steak, Mandalay Noodles Bowl, and different variations of grilled sticky rice taste delicious too. The stir-fry bowls are a must ry. For dessert, you cannot miss out on the coconut-based Tagu Pyian.

Motherland Cafe

Located in Kyd Street, this cafe-cum-coworking studio offers a wide array of vegan dishes. All their beverages are vegan. The milk-based ones can be made using almond milk. We would definitely recommend the Motherland Signature Greens and the Cold Soba Noodle Salad. Then, there’s avocado toast, buckwheat crepes, Brussels Delight, Verdure Firenze, and pasta varieties on offer. Many dishes can be made vegan even if the same isn’t mentioned on the menu.
