It's Pawsome: Volunteer At These Animal Welfare Organisations

If animal welfare is on your to-do list, but you’re unsure of where to volunteer, look no further. We’ve got you covered with this list.

Like A Dog

Run by Reshmi Sensharma, Like A Dog (LAD) aims to team up with experienced vaccinators and volunteers to conduct anti-rabies vaccinations in and around Kolkata. Focusing on spay-and-neuter programmes as well as anti-rabies drives, the objective of LAD is to vaccinate as many stray dogs as possible. There are three way you can volunteer. One, You can work for the many rabies vaccination drives conducted by this organisation (either help on the spot or collect data about how many dogs were vaccinated in a particular area). Two, you could help raise funds for sterilisation.

And finally, you could help with the pan-India campaign for a Rabies Free India they are pushing (in association with the Federation of Indian Animal Protection Organizations). This requires institutional partnerships to conduct mass rabies drives, control sterilisation as well as awareness drives regarding dogs and how to approach them in government schools and hospitals. Start by distributing leaflets and raising funds for this.

To get in touch with LAD, call them at 9831885229 or WhatsApp them at 9831195454. Or e-mail them at bark@likeadog.org.

It’s A Dog’s Life

Run by college student Anushka Dasgupta, IADL has a narrow mandate involving sterilisation and vaccinations in and around Kolkata including, but not limited to, Park Circus, CIT Road, Park Street, Sudder Street and Kyd Street. This may not involve collection of data or deskwork so get ready to roll your sleeves up and get involved!

Work has been incredibly slow owing to a severe lack of donations, and they need people  to come forward to contribute to their cause. INR 60 protects a dog against rabies for 3 years, INR 1,500 sterilises a dog for life, INR 230 protects a pup from distemper, parainfluenza, hepatitis, and parvo, INR 1,000/month helps Tarzan, their permanent resident at the Love And Care Hospital For Animals by paying for her chemotherapy and medication.

Ashari Shelter

An animal-shelter cum hospital and research institute, (ASHARI, in short) is run by People for Animals’ Kolkata chapter. Run solely by donations, they also happen to be the largest distemper treatment shelter for street dogs in Kolkata.

Apart from donating in money or in kind {medicines or medicinal equipment or even food grains}, one can even consider adopting an animal from the shelter (actively or passively — by contributing a small monthly donation to keep your chosen animal in comfortable circumstances in the shelter itself).

If you’re looking to volunteer, day-to-day care of the shelter animals is something you can definitely work on. This includes helping paraveterinary workers take care of sick and injured animals, walking shelter dogs, feeding and changing water bowls etc. Call them at 8335045433.
