Why head to Karnataka to visit a coffee estate, when Maharashtra got its own, about 600 kms from Pune. Yes, that's right! Located in the hilly terrains of Amravati district, Chikhaldara is the only place in the state that has large lands of beautiful coffee plantations.
However, Chikhaldara is not just about its coffee estates. The place is full of deep valleys, misty hills, natural blue water tanks, wildlife sanctuary, century-old forts and more.
Situated on a high plateau, about 1,120 metres above sea level, Chikhaldara finds a very interesting place in Hindu mythology, specifically in Mahabharata. It is said, Bheema defeated King Kichak in Chikhaldara, and later threw his body in to the deep, deep valleys out here. So, if you know and love your history right, this is definitely your kinda place.
We highly recommend you visit the Chikhaldara Sanctuary, which is known to be a home for animals like the flying squirrel, mouse deer, porcupine, langur, chausingha, blue bull, Indian bison, wild dog, leopard, pangolin, Rhesus monkey, wild boar, ratel, tigers and more.
A visit to Chikhaldara is definitely incomplete without seeing the magnificent Bhimkund, a natural blue water tank, located about 78 km from Chhattarpur district, enroute from Chikhaldara to Pratwada.
If you love to trek, check out the ancient fort of Narnala, which is a group of three forts - Zafrabad, Teliagarh and Narnala. What's more? Known for its unique architecture, the hill fort of Gwaligarh is a must-visit!
End your trip with a visit to Muktagiri, a picturesque collection of 52 Jain temples, built in the mountains, against a lush green backdrop.
