The Central Railway Authorities {Pune} recently flagged the first set of electric multiple units {EMU} for the trip between Pune and Lonavla, estimating it to reduce the journey time by 20 minutes.

It normally takes 90 minutes for us to reach Lonavla. But no more! With the introduction of EMUs that run at 100kmph as against the conventional rake running in at 80kmph, commuters will be put to ease by shortening the trip. With each rake having 12 coaches, and an exceptional technology developed by Siemens to it’s advantage, EMUs will be taking over short distances in no time. Not limiting itself to only speed, it will also have coachwise public announcement, air suspension, addressing system and better interiors for it’s passengers.
Additional Ventilation Facility System {AHU} and bigger sized coaches will allow more passengers to commute in one sitting. Not just that, the motors being three-phased induction ones at 240KW and demanding less maintenance and parking brakes, the Central Railways have taken a big step towards the betterment and safety of the railways. Equipped with a man-machine interface technology, the driver will be alerted immediately and automatically about the faults that may arise in the system, if any.
According to a senior official, 4 more rakes will be introduced in Pune, arriving from Mumbai, in a month’s time. Since all 5 rakes cannot be accommodated at the same time, the new rakes will be replacing the conventional ones. With commuters mainly comprising of college students and working professionals, it’ll be a good deal. Pune could witness even newer and improved trains coming up.
