Pune’s music scene is burgeoning with young talent. Here are 5 Pune-based musicians that should be on your playlist.

Easy Wanderlings

Easy Wanderlings describes themselves as, “a musical journal of their cherished memories about soulful conversations, escapades into the majestic wilderness, and of the feelings felt when spending quiet evenings at home. Formed in March 2015, they’re fairly new but have already made quite an impression on the Indian indie music scene. Their debut album, “As Written In The Stars” {available on their website} was just launched on September 13th 2017, and makes for friendly, relaxed listening. Having performed at secret Sofar Sounds gigs to major music festivals and flea markets, they’re definitely one to watch. Keep an eye on their social media feeds for updates on their next gig! Aswekeepsearching

Formed in 2013, this quartet comprises of Uddipan Sarmah {vocals/guitar}, Shubham Gurung {vocals/keyboard}, Bob Alex {bass}, and Gautam Deb {drums}. Their first full length release titled ‘Khwaab’ {in 2015} led to a 5 city tour in Russia, and the subsequent year spent touring and promoting it also led to the conception of their second album, ‘Zia’. They’ve performed at numerous Indian indie music festivals {and are also on the roster for NH7 Weekender 2017}, their sound having been described as, “ambient post-rock”. Both their albums are available for download through their Facebook Page, and their upcoming country-wide tour dates and info is available there as well.

Derric D'souza

A recent entrant on the Pune music scene is Derric D’souza – a young singer-songwriter with a great voice. A pianist and guitarist, Derric usually uses the latter in his live performances, crooning everything from Jason Mraz and Ed Sheeran covers, to his own humorous-yet-groovy originals. When he’s not wooing the crowd solo, he performs with percussionist Shaun Sequeira. They make beautiful music together, and you can catch them gigging at cafes, restaurants and events all around Pune. Derric is also currently working on recording his solo album – so expect big things! Check out his Facebook page.

Christabel Menezes

If anyone personified the phrase, “big things come in small packages”, it would be Christabel Menezes. She may be tiny, but this girl’s got a huge voice! A self-described ‘street performer at heart’, she has a vast repertoire of songs – from old time classics to modern-day favourites. Her original songs are deep and meaningful, with a folk and soul kinda vibe. Christabel will hopefully be releasing some of her own compositions (co-written with Smit Hajare) by December, this year. You can have a listen on her SoundCloud page, or catch her at one of her many gigs around town.
