Sinhagad Fort

Sinhagad Fort, also known as Lion’s Fort, is one of the most popular forts around Pune. It is just a short one and half hour drive away from the city. Historically known for being a battleground, Sinhagad Fort is popular for trekking because of its steep slopes, sightseeing, and panoramic views of the surrounding Sahyadris. It is extremely popular on weekends and in the monsoon season.

How To Reach: You can travel by MSRTC bus from Swargate Bus Station or opt for private cabs

Malhargad Fort

Also known as Sonori Fort for the village that lies at its base, Malhargad Fort is located near Saswad. It is again a one and half hour drive from Pune. There are two temples here -- one for Lord Khandoba and one for Lord Mahadeva. The fort is small and makes for an ideal day trip. Bicycling, trekking and overnight camping are also popular activities here. It’s a bit isolated, so plan to go there in a large group. FYI, there is not much parking space, so we recommend parking at the base of the fort and walking to the top.

Pratapgad Fort

Next on our list of forts near Pune is Pratapgad Fort. The fort is one of Maharashtra's best-maintained historical wonders. It is also called the Valour Fort since the battle between Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and Afzhal Khan in 1656 took place here. Now, a 17-ft-tall statue of Shivaji Maharaj stands here. Lohagad Fort is located right near Malavali village, which is on the outskirts of Lonavala. Now, it is popular for trekking because of the steep incline.

How To Reach: You can reach by car, it’s a 2-hour drive from Pune. You can also take a train to Lonavala and then catch a local train to Malavli station.

Purandar Fort

Famous for being the birthplace of Sambhaji, the son of Shivaji Maharaj, Purandar Fort is about 2 hours away from Pune by car. This architectural ruin is a masterpiece famous for its ancient temples, relics, and the Dilli Darwaza. It’s ideal for a one-day trip or trek, and the lush green views are spectacular. The fort is controlled by the Indian Army, so it is better to carry valid ID proof. Also, one can only enter between 9 AM and 2:30 PM and leave by 5 PM.

Rajgad Fort

Rajgad Fort is a beautiful site that offers a glimpse into the royal history of the Marathas. The fort has breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding landscape, making it an ideal spot to spend your day.

Rajmachi Fort

Located just outside Lonavala, Rajmachi Fort is an extremely popular destination for camping and trekking. It’s a 2.5-hour drive from Pune, close to Della Adventure Park. This fort is a protected monument, and includes a historical water reservoir, Shiv Mandir, fortifications, ramparts, and twin fortresses --  Shrivardhan and Manoranjan, among other structures. If you plan on camping, we suggest you make arrangements in advance – there are several tour and camping groups that arrange treks and other activities around Rajmachi Fort.

Tikona Fort

Tikona Fort, located near the village of Tikona-Peth, is a great place for those keen on exploring historical sites. Tikona, meaning triangular, got its name due to its pyramidal shape. This fort is one of the best forts around Pune, providing both a cultural experience and a refreshing escape. It is also popular for its Trimbakeshwar Mahadev temple, Satavahana-era caves, and Pawna Dam, which offers stunning views. It is very narrow at the top, so don't climb there in large groups.

How To Reach: You can take a train to Lonavala. From there, there are regular buses to Kamshet. Once you reach there, take a bus to Tikona Peth.

Torna Fort

Torna Fort was the first fort captured by Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. With a height of more than 4600 feet above sea level, this fort is one of the highest forts near Pune. Torna Fort is the perfect place to experience history and natural beauty. It is a popular trekking spot, and the trek begins from Velhe village as its base. During your 4-hour trek, you’ll come across structures like Bini Darwaza, Menghai Goddess Temple, Budhla Machi, and Zunjar Machi.

How To Reach: From Swargate bus station, take a bus that goes to Velhe village. The trek to the fort starts from the road next to the Velhe Police station.

Tung Fort

Located near Tungwadi village, Tung Fort can also be accessed from Lonavala. It was built by the Adil Shahi dynasty in the 17th century but was captured by Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. Because of its difficulty of access, the fort acted as a haven for invaders. Considered a moderately challenging route, Tung Fort stands 3526 ft high above sea level and is surrounded by water on three sides. This site is accessible by climbing a steep 1,200 ft area of the fort.

Korigad Fort

Korigad Fort, located near Aamby Valley, is a great trek if you are looking for a relaxed adventure. The trail starts from Peth Shahpur village and is short and easy to follow. During the monsoon, the path fills with wildflowers. Once you reach the top, you can enjoy the breathtaking 360-degree views of the valleys and the Mulshi backwaters.

How To Reach: The nearest railway station is Lonavala Railway Station. From station, you can take a taxi or a bus to the base village, Peth Shahpur. The trek to the fort starts from there.

Irshalgad Fort

Irshalgad sits 3,700 ft above sea level between Matheran and Panvel, and it’s easy to reach. The trek offers beautiful views of the Morbe Reservoir. It’s an easy to moderate climb, suitable even for beginners. On the way, you’ll come across rock-cut water tanks and some wildlife.

Ghanagad Fort

Ghanagad Fort is just a short drive from Lonavala or Khandala. This centuries-old fort offers a fun trekking experience. Earlier, the trek was considered tough because of a steep rock patch, but a ladder has now been installed, making the climb much easier. Along the way, you’ll enjoy views of the Tail Baila walls, explore impressive caves, walk through a dense forest, and take in a stunning 360-degree view of the surrounding mountains.

Rohida Fort

Rohida Fort, also called Vichitragad, dates back to the Yadava period. The trek to the top is easy and takes about an hour to reach the main gate. Along the way, you’ll come across a rock-cut water tank, elephant idols, and three beautiful gates with inscriptions in Farsi and Marathi. The fort has seven bastions, and you’ll need over an hour to explore the whole place.

How To Reach: You can hire a cab to reach Bajarwadi, the fort’s base village.

Malhargad Fort

Malhargad, built in 1775, is the last fort constructed by the Maratha Empire. From the base, you can choose between two routes to reach the top. One that goes to the Mahadarwaja (main gate) and another that takes you to the back of the fort. Inside, you’ll find temples dedicated to Lord Shiva and Khandoba. During the monsoon, the fort fills with small ponds formed by rainwater. Although many inner structures are now in ruins, the panoramic view of Saswad from the top is absolutely stunning.

How To Reach: You can take a taxi or a bus going to Saswad/Velhe.
