From strawberry picking at a farm and exploring an art village to climbing historical forts and camping in the wild, there is a lot to do.

The Kaas Plateau

Located in Satara, Kaas is the perfect weekend getaway in the lap of nature, surrounded by colourful flora, fresh air, and a magnificent cool-blue lake to the north of the plateau. A UNESCO World Heritage Site and a biodiversity hotspot, Kaas is about three hours from Pune, housing over 850 different species of rare plants.

Distance From Pune: 136 KM

How To Reach: If you’re driving, take the road towards Satara via NH48. If you want to take public transport, there are several trains that run from Pune to Satara station. Kaas is almost 30km from the Satara station.

Mapro Garden

Mapro Garden in Mahabaleshwar is a strawberry lover's paradise. Set against a beautiful backdrop of lush green trees and magnificent Sahyadri ranges, Mapro Garden has an adventure park, a factory tour, delicacies, a drive-in shopping facility, and a lot more to offer. You can also relive your Charlie And The Chocolate Factory moment at Maazana. Located inside Mapro, Mazaana Chocolate Factory produces over 11,000 kgs of finished chocolate products every hour. From nutty chocolate pops to decadent dark cocoa bars, they have it all. The place is neatly divided into different units. While on one side you may see the cocoa beans getting sorted, another section is dedicated to packaging and distribution of the chocolate bars.

Distance From Pune: 111 KM

How To Reach: It is located on the Old Mumbai-Pune Highway. The nearest railway station is Lonavala. You can take Deccan Express, Pragati Express, Deccan Queen or Intercity Express. It will take around an hour to reach the station. From the station, Mapro Garden is 2.6 kilometres away.

Pustakanch Gaava

Pustakanch Gaav (village of books) in Bhilar is for the bibliophile in you. We hear the government has assigned 25 readers’ hotspots across the village, dedicated to particular genres of literature. While at one spot you may find everything about history and biographies, another spot is dedicated to poetry and fiction. With over 10,000 books, Bhilar is one of the top villages in the country with the highest per capita availability of books.

Distance From Pune: 110 KM

How To Reach: The most convenient way to reach Bhilar is by car. If you’re using public transport, take a bus to Panchgani, and then hire a local taxi to the village.

Rhythm Lonavala

Located at Tungarli in Lonavala, Rhythm is a luxury resort with sprawling green lawns and boutique suites overlooking a swimming pool. There are wooden cabanas on each side of the pool, and a golf course too. The resort also features a cocktail bar, a cafe, and a restaurant with a global fare. We loved their quaint studio suite called the Cypress, which is designed as per traditional Balinese artwork.

Lavasa Hill City

Taking inspiration from the Italian town of Portofino, Lavasa is one of the most sought-after getaways from Pune. Just an hour and a half ride away from Pune, Panshet is basically the back end of Panshet Dam. The views from here are breathtaking, and there is a small eatery on the hillock that serves some delicious food. The best part about Panshet is that it's fit for off-roading as well. You can also do some water sports over here.

You can even camp the night to experience fireflies with bio-luminescent lights.

How To Reach: You can get regular trains from Pune and reach Lonavala. From there, take an auto or a taxi.

Devrai Art Village

Just a two-and-a-half-hour drive from Pune, Devrai Art Village is a creative space where indigenous artists thrive. Started by Mandakini Mathur, a filmmaker and poet, the green village offered a safe space to three Dhokra artists from the Naxalite region to come and preserve their traditional art form. Now, it has 50+ artisans who work, play, and create together. You can take a tour, learn more about their process, and buy their beautiful artwork at the store.

How To Reach: If you prefer to use local transport, buses and trains run frequently between Pune and Panchgani.

Matheran

Untouched by the bustling city life, Matheran feels like a walk back in time. Located in the Western Ghats, the little hill station has pleasant weather throughout the year, making it perfect for a long weekend. Matheran offers many attractive spots to keep you busy throughout your trip. From spectacular waterfalls, caves, and treks to a toy train ride that you'll never forget. The best part is the breathtaking sunset view from Porcupine Point.

How To Reach: The nearest railway station is Neral, and Matheran is around 11 kilometres away from Neral. From Neral, you can hire a taxi.

Andharban

If you want that perfect green escape from the city into a dark, dense forest full of majestic waterfalls, enchanting birds, and exotic wildflowers, head to Andharban. The ideal time to visit this forest is in the monsoon, although a winter trek is just as rewarding. Trek through the night through paddy fields, water streams, small villages, wide plateaus, exotic flowers, and scenic views of Kundalika Valley. Camp the night at Patnus village for stargazing and bonfires.

Pratapgad Fort

The fort is one of Maharashtra's best-maintained historical wonders. It is also called the Valour Fort since the battle between Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and Afzhal Khan in 1656 took place here. Now, a 17-ft-tall statue of Shivaji Maharaj stands here. You can also hire a guide here to learn about the history.

Fort Jadhavgadh

If you're looking for something grand, take a day trip to Fort Jadhavgadh. Maharashtra's only heritage hotel, which is built inside a fort. It was built by Sri Pillaji Jadhavrao in 1710 CE as a place of residence. The palace is surrounded by custard apple and fig farms, with the hills of Dive Ghat in the backdrop that make for a picture-perfect picnic.

Famous for being the birthplace of Sambhaji, the son of Shivaji Maharaj, Purandar Fort is about 2 hours away from Pune by car. This architectural ruin is a masterpiece famous for its ancient temples, relics, and the Dilli Darwaza. It’s ideal for a one-day trip or trek, and the lush green views are spectacular. The fort is controlled by the Indian Army, so it is better to carry valid ID proof. Also, one can only enter between 9 AM and 2:30 PM and must leave by 5 PM.
