One of the many things Pune is known for is the presence of multiple Cantonments. Khadki is one such military cantonment of the city that is lush green, quiet and serene. The famous Military Hospital aka MH is situated here along with so many other official bungalows, officers' mess, military offices, Bombay Sappers etc. This area is also known as Kirkee cantonment. For years, people have been confused over its name. Well, Kirkee and Khadki is the same place and there's an interesting story behind it: The famous battle of Khadki also known as the Battle of Kirkee was fought way back in 1817 between the Maratha Army led by Peshwa Bajirao 2 and East India Company's army led by Col Burr and Capt Ford. The latter won the battle and renamed Khadki as Kirkee as the Englishmen found its pronounciation difficult. Even after the independence, the authorities continued with the name Kirkee. Years later, it was resolved that all official communication of the army and the cantonment authorities will use Khadki and that's how the name was restored.
The locality has a colonial charm to it. It houses beautiful buildings and churches. If you happen to be in the area for a day, here’s how you can spend your time eating, drinking, shopping, roaming and visiting attractions.
