What Makes It Awesome

An unassuming space, Kerala Fast Food in Aundh, is located beside Kerala Restaurant and Mega Stores. While the store on top offers a bunch of snacks, masalas and other typically Malayali groceries, the restaurant offers authentic food. It’s a small menu that’s very typical of the culture and the food is delicious.

The menu has parotta and kothu parotta, sadhya meals, and fry, roast and curries. It’s a very simple and basic menu and that’s what we love about the place. It’s a no-frill Kerala restaurant that’s offering authentic food, which homesick Malayalis and others who love eating authentic food will love. We loved the vegetarian onam sadhya for INR 120, which came on a banana leaf (a fake one) and had Kerala brown rice, sambhar, kootu curry (regional curry), thoran (stir-fried vegetables), papadum, pickle, and morru (buttermilk). The meal also includes rasam and payassum, but it wasn’t available for the day.

Non-vegetarians will love the options. You can opt for a banana leaf meal in chicken, fish or buff variant starting at INR 200. If you love tapioca, try the chicken or buff tapioca biryani or stick to rice with a Kerala biryani. We loved the fish fry, where the catch of the day (sardines, in our case) is fried in some masalas. And, the buff masala roast was worth every bite and cooked beautiful. We wiped it off with soft, pillowy appams.

If you’re new to the cuisine, order a curry or a masala roast. The biryani and kothu parotta are a good bet too. The restaurant also has a Kerala omelette, egg appam, vegetable stew and puttu served separately or with a curry as breakfast.

A meal for two will cost you around INR 400. You can also pick up a few snacks from the store, some of which are also available at the restaurant. The humble little space is worth taking a trip to, if you love the cuisine or are eager to try it.
