According to Airports Authority of India {AAI}, 15 unmanaged airports and airstrips will be taken into consideration along with increase in flight connectivity. This scheme will be undertaken in the year 2017-2018.
They expect 4 of these airports to be functional by the end of this financial year after a nod from several airlines showing interest in operating flights to regional destinations under UDAN.
Owing to demand, the authorities have resorted to bidding as a process for the selection of the airlines.
While the Kolhapur and Jalgaon airports are managed by AAI, Solapur Airport’s construction has been undertaken by Maharashtra Airport Development Company Limited. Sri Guru Gobind Singhji Airport is managed by Reliance Airport Developers Private Limited and Ozar Airport is managed by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited {HUL}.
According to an official, these 5 airports have not been attended to as far as civil rights are concerned. Only after the airlines start their operations, will we get to see their development.
A 4500 crore plan has already been approved by the Union Cabinet to take up the development of 50 such airports.
A total of 29 airports and airstrips from Maharashtra have made it to the list.
