Shortcut

No trip to Mahabaleshwar is complete without a trek to Pratapgad fort. A very popular tourist attraction, it is located approximately 24 Km from Mahabaleshwar. built by Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, the fort is located around 1100 meters above sea level.

What Makes It Awesome?

Revisit history by going on a trek to the iconic Pratapgad fort in Satara district near Pune. With gigantic watchtowers, Tulza Bhavani Temple and a Shivaji Maharaj Statue, the fort has still retained its royalty. Divided into upper forts and lower forts, which are magnificent and surrounded by sheer cliffs.

Just a couple of hours drive from Pune, the journey to reach the fort is scenic and enjoyable. You will find ample parking space in the Wada village from where you can proceed with the trek which is quite easy and suitable for beginners.

When in Pratapgad, you can also visit Rahat Lake which is the largest lake on the fort. If you and your gang are looking for a suitable camping place, we suggest you camp in the Mahadev Temple which is a popular camping spot. Do not forget to carry your tents, just in case, the temple is crowded and you have no space.

We suggest you visit the fort during monsoon as there is lush greenery everywhere and the views are spectacular. Winters are a great time as well. We love the old guides who narrate beautiful tales about the rich history while taking you on a tour.

What Could Be Better?

We feel that the fort needs proper maintenance as one side of the stone wall has collapsed and there is a steep fall after that. The authorities should look into the matter and take the required steps.

Pro-Tip

While you climb up the fort, there are many small stalls of authentic food. We suggest you make stops to these places to gorge on lip-smacking food.
