Within the confines of the Yerwada Central Jail, an extraordinary initiative is quietly unfolding. Shrunkhala Uphar Gruha, staffed entirely by open-jail inmates, serves delicious snacks and offers a powerful message of hope, redemption, and rehabilitation.
This unique eatery operates much like any other restaurant, with a kitchen, dining area, and diverse menu, but the key difference is the staff of 15 people. The incarcerated individuals, dressed in a magenta uniform, are trained to cook, serve, and other roles essential to running a restaurant. Even the design, decor, and infrastructure have been done by the inmates. According to Yerwada Central Prison, inmates get a chance to develop skills that can prove invaluable upon their release, increasing their chances of successful reintegration into society. This programme equips them with marketable skills to help build their self-esteem and confidence.
When it comes to food, the menu is kept short and simple. You'll find all your favourite Puneri snacks like misal pav, vada pav, kanda bhajji, upma, pohe, and pav bhaji, available throughout the day. During lunchtime, Shrunkhala Uphar Gruha also serves thalis with chapati, bhaji, dal, and rice. A portion of every meal is cooked with organic vegetables grown by the inmates inside the jail. The rates are also quite pocket-friendly. Nothing costs more than INR 90 bucks.
