You are a true Punekar if you also roll your eyes at someone who says that they don't know what a mastani means. How about sipping a chilled glass of thick mango milkshake with a generous dollop of creamy vanilla or mango ice cream, topped with slices of pistachios, almonds, and cashews? This is the famous kesar mango mastani from the 50-year-old ice-cream shop, Sujata Mastani. The brand has multiple outlets across the city and has become synonymous with Pune's dessert culture.
What started as a tiny ice-cream parlour back in 1967 with mere five flavours on display, Sujata Mastani, today is a one-of-a-kind brand serving delectable mastani, ice-creams and thick shakes in 33 flavours, spread across 24 outlets in Pune. Undoubtedly, it has been a tremendous journey for the Kondhalkar family who introduced the concept of ‘mastani’ to India.
We have tried almost everything from the humble one-page menu and we cannot pin point our favourites. So we recommend you to try them all! But if we absolutely have to, then we say must-try the kesar mango {INR 75}, the special kesar pista {INR 85} and the fresh sitaphal {INR 75} mastanis. During summers, try the gulkand mastani as well. Under milkshakes, do try the strawberry, rose and khus shakes.
Ice cream lovers, Sujata Mastani’s chocolate fudge badam, royal treat, dry anjir and kaju draksha for INR 45 are sweet love served in a cup {or cone}!
An iconic dessert, it has become synonymous with every Punekar.
