When the temperature starts to rise, there’s only one thing you can do to beat the summer heat. Take a break from that all madness and escape somewhere far away. Here are five summer trips you can take from Pune to cool off.

Mahabaleshwar

Planning a weekend getaway to Mahabaleshwar? Keep this guide handy to make the most out of your trip! Nestled among the Sahyadri Mountain ranges, there are a lot of enchanting places in Mahabaleshwar. If you’re a nature and adventure lover, a trek to these falls comes highly recommended. You have to walk through the forest to reach this waterfall which is situated amidst nature, a beautiful spot for picnics, and photography. The best time to visit Lingmala Falls is between July and December. The Dhobi waterfall and Chinaman’s waterfall are also located nearby.

Lonavala

Picnics are fun and if you are planning one with your gang, what can be a better option than Lonavala? Not only is it an hour and a half away by car from Pune but you can also take a local train there. It's the closest hill station from Pune for a one-day getaway. It also has great picnic spots, lakes, hillocks and waterfalls.

Bhandara

This little hill retreat, 162 km from the city, is the best option to travel on a long weekend. See the Western Ghats in all its beauty, stunning waterfalls, and serene mountains. If trekking is your stress buster and rugged terrains give you an adrenaline rush, then this quaint hill town in Ahmednagar is worth exploring. You must check out the jungle camping here and visit Mount Kalsubai too. You can either take a bus from Swargate which will cost you around INR 500 or just make a road trip with your friends.

Matheran

Matheran, the smallest hill paradise in India, is full of scenic views which will lift up your spirits. Its lush greenery, rocky patches, and eye-pleasing surroundings with breathtaking views add to the ceaseless charm. It is located 120 km from the city so it should take you around three hours by car. Trek to the Chanderi caves, and spot old Parsi and British-era bungalows where the rich once lived. Some are also available as homestays. There are plenty of trekking trails here to explore. Matheran is also the only automobile-free station in all of Asia, so find a horse to ride if you're tired of walking.

Panchgani

We couldn't leave this crowd favourite hill station out! Panchgani is a 3-hour drive from Pune and you can also get there by public buses for INR 350-400. Explore the main market, indulge in activities like go-karting, zip-ling, paintball and much. You should also check out tableland and Sydney point for the most breath-taking views. You can either book an Airbnb or stay at the Zostel for INR 800 a night. Don't forget to visit the Cheese Factory - a little head from the market road- where you can see how chocolates and different types of cheese are made.
