As the cultural capital of Maharashtra, Pune has always championed arts, education, and theatres. From the legendary Bhartiya Natya Mandir that started in 1894 to the iconic Bal Gandharva Rang Mandir that hosts over 1,000 shows a year, the city has played a big part in keeping the theatre space thriving. Adding to the on-growing list is yet another exciting performance art space called The Box.
Designed for endless creative configurations, The Box Pune is a one-of-a-kind art space that offers an immersive theatre experience like no other. Originally an industrial shed, the theatre is like a big rectangular box painted black to provide a neutral slate to be transformed according to the director's imagination. It has high ceilings for better acoustics and adaptable lighting that can be set up at any corner of the space. Plus, flexible seating to flow according to the show. The best part about this black box theatre is that it has a very intimate feel that allows the artists to connect with the audience on a much deeper level.
Located near Karve Road, The Box Pune was envisioned by Pune-based theatre professionals Rupali Bhave and Pradeep Vaidya, who felt that the city needed a different type of performing space that can host everything from musical shows to performance art to experimental theatre groups. The Box also features a small nook that doubles up as an open art gallery to showcase the creative talents of students from across the city.
