One of the most private, cosy and intimate parts of our homes, bedrooms need a little extra care when it comes to designing. From the colours you pick to the furniture you install, the design of your bedroom contributes to your overall wellness. Irrespective of the size, any bedroom can look and feel like a sanctuary when done up well. Here are 10 simple ways to achieve the modern bedroom of your dreams.

Go Minimal

One of the first rules of thumb any home decor expert will tell you, is to keep your bedroom clutter free. Pick your top three priorities in the bedroom interior, say colour, bed positioning and size and storage. You can start designing your space with these three focal points in mind. Scandinavian designs like neutral colours and simple structures are most popular in 2023 for achieving the minimal look.

Make Your Bed The Focal Point

One of the biggest investments you'll make while designing your bedroom is the bed itself. We recommend picking a softer, warmer material like wood for the bed. Unlike metal with sharper edges, wooden beds hold onto the mattress well, without any slips. If you're keen on getting an Italian style bed, make sure the edges are soft, and won't hurt you.

Use Complementing Soft Furnishings

A simple rule that you can sustain over time is to use complementing colours for your soft furnishings like your curtains, throws or accent pillows. While accent pillows can be cutesy, make sure to pick just the right number so you enjoy making your bed every morning instead of getting overwhelmed. Items that need laundering less often, like rugs, dhurries and curtains can be used in matching or complementing colours so there's a cohesive look in your bedroom without much effort. If you can't find the exact shades, look for pieces in the same colour family like pastels or neutrals.

Use Symmetrical Elements

If you're confused about what other accents can be used in your bedroom, use symmetrical furniture. Two of the same nightstands on either side of the bed, pendant lamps and wall lamps that maintain the balance on either sides of the bed. The room looks well-put together easily, and with a similar colour palette, there are lesser design decisions you would need to make.

Install Calming Wallpaper

Wallpapers come in several bright and colourful patterns. If you want to pick something simple and elegant, choose a pattern that has soft lines and an uncomplicated design. Pick an accent wall for your wallpaper, and make sure it complements the rest of the colours in the room. We recommend picking the wallpaper at the end, after you've zero-ed down on the rest of your bedroom design.

Use Bamboo And Wicker Accessories

Aside from the colours and the bed, the accessories play a huge role in creating your bedroom's overall vibe. If earthy, natural elements are up your alley, we highly recommend using bamboo and wicker wherever possible. Think bamboo pendant lamp shades, wicker baskets for your pillows and throws among other knick knacks.

Display Fresh Blooms

Shop from your local flower market, or simply get a few cuts from a local garden, and you don't need to pay an arm and a leg for fresh flowers. Fresh flowers and plants are the simplest way to decorate your space. Get a vase that looks pretty even without blooms in it, and your nightstand decor is sorted.

Go Monochrome

We get it, designing any space is super overwhelming. If you're someone who appreciates muted, classic aesthetics, we highly recommend going monochrome in the bedroom. Think matching soft furnishings, bedspreads and pillows. While white is a classic and always works, you could always elevate the space with accessories if you'd like to make changes later on. The design is super easy to execute too.

Pick One Or Two Art Pieces

Not sure of how to decorate your walls? You can always leave them bare, however, art makes any space look lived-in, adding a bit of your own personality into the bedroom. Pick one focal art piece with a simple colour palette to deck up your walls.

Showcase A Vintage Element

Vintage and retro pieces look simple, stylish and ooze character in any space. If you're lucky to own one, make space for it in your bedroom to bring in the nostalgia. You can easily shop for some pieces at local markets and refurbish them too. Since the pieces themselves look beautiful, there's little else you need to do to deck up the nook.
