Tawang is a small town in Arunachal Pradesh that offers one of the most diverse attractions, from scenic waterfalls, lakes, spots covered in nature, to monasteries. It also houses India's biggest Buddhist monastery, showcasing a rich culture and natural beauty. Best time to visit: March to June and from September to October. The temperatures then range from 10 to 25 degrees which is ideal for sight seeing and activities. 

Tawang Monastery

Founded in the 17th century, it is India's largest Buddhist monastery that can accommodate upto 700 monks. It has also become a significant spiritual centre for Tibetan Buddhism. The monastery is located 10,000 above sea level, displaying Tibetan architecture at its finest. In addition to it, the monastery also houses an eighteen feet tall golden statue of Buddha situated in the main assembly hall. The place is renowned for its spiritual significance which surely can't be missed!

Tawang War Memorial

The Tawang War Memorial is a Buddhist shrine that commemorates soldiers who were martyred in the 1962 Indo-China War. Located in the snow capped mountains and designed in traditional Buddhist elements, the memorial features a museum displaying soldiers' belongings. Additionally, they also host a sound and light show unfolding the war history.

Jaswant Garh War Memorial

Jaswant Garh War Memorial is located 25 kilometers from Tawang in the Nuranang district and was built to pay homage to the bravery of Rifleman Jaswant Singh Rawat. This war memorial honours his heroic stand against the Chinese army. It features a temple like structure and is tended by Garhwal Rifles personnel offering visitors a chance to pay respect.

Pankang Teng Tso Lake

If you are a nature lover then Tawang has got you covered with its serene lakes. Which is also mostly what folks visit the place for. The Pankang Teng Tso Lake is known for its crystal clear water and stunning mountain views. The mountain is surrounded by snow capped mountains. So, if you are visiting during the summer time, don't forget to check it out!

Sela Pass

Sela Pass is situated 4,170 meters above sea level and is a must-visit for its breathtaking scenery. It is surrounded by snow capped mountains and pine trees, and is accessible year-round (except during landslide season). Furthermore, Sela pass is mostly known for numerous serene lakes including the picturesque Sela Lake.

LBB Tip: Also note that due to high altitude, it is not advisable to stay for long as you may experience altitude sickness.

Nuranang Waterfall

Chagzam Bridge

The Chagzam Bridge is a 15th-century suspension bridge built by the Tibetan saint named Lama Chagzam Wangpo. And because of this feat, the sheer strength and craftsmanship is what has attracted most tourists.

Gorsam Chorten Buddhist Stupa

The Gorsam Chorten is located in the village of Zemithang near Tawang and is an important Buddhist stupa inspired by Nepal's Boudhanath Stupa. Built in the early 18th century, it features a massive white dome that is surrounded by prayer wheels. This place is also a popular pilgrimage site.

Gyang-gong Ani Gonpa is a nunnery built on a hillside. It was originally established as a meditation retreat by Merak Lama Lodroe Gyatso for his sister. Over the course of time it has evolved into a full fledged nunnery as more nuns joined. The peaceful nunnery offers insight into the spiritual lives of the nuns.
