Let's begin by saying that May is an eventful month for celebrities (and their stylists) all over the world. While you're still recovering from the Met Gala fever — the Cannes Film Festival red carpet is knocking at your door, requiring your undivided attention to judge all the looks while you sit at home in your pyjamas with a matcha latte in hand because when couture calls, you reply!

With the Cannes Film Festival now over (the last day was May 25), we thought we'd do a roundup of our favourite looks of all time so that when our kids ask what the fuss around the Cannes red carpet was, we have pictures handy as proof of its iconic status.

Nancy Tyagi, 2024

Of course, we had to begin with the look that has sparked the most conversation this year on our side of the world. Nancy Tyagi, a fashion and styling content creator was on all media pages on the day of her Cannes red carpet debut, all thanks to her stunning DIY gown which took her 30 days to make from 1,000 meters of fabric. The gown weighed more than 20 kilograms, and her confidence weighed more than anyone could handle; it was a truly proud moment for those of us back home.

Bella Hadid, 2021

We (still) need a moment to stop gawking at this Schiaparelli dress worn by Bella Hadid in 2021. Schiaparelli on their IG, had described this dress long-sleeved dress in wool crepe with a low-cut neckline. The dress's neckline cut below the chest which was covered by a gold-dipped rhinestone-embellished necklace shaped like the bronchi passageway of the lungs and was honestly giving oxygen (or life) to our sartorial dreams. Well, what can we say? Bella's Cannes looks have hardly ever missed but this one in particular stands out because who wouldn't love an avant-garde Schiaparelli moment.

Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, 2021

While the internet is torn over Aish's looks being a slay or nay this year, we just want to remind everyone that there was a time when ARB was the queen of Cannes red carpets. This icy blue Michael Cinco look pays homage to Aish's glory days as the quintessential Cannes showstopper. Aish's Cinderella moment, with its delicate floral embroidery, off-shoulder style, and perfect fit, remains one of the most whimsical looks we've seen on the carpet. Keenly waiting for her to recreate this magic again (please).

Jennifer Lawrence, 2023

Jennifer Lawrence made headlines last year when she wore flip flops instead of high heels on the Cannes red carpet. For the uninitiated, there's an unsaid 'rule' that one's supposed to wear high heels on the red carpet which has been scrutinized by many. While J-Law's intention was not to make a political statement (or so she claimed), we must admit that the dress itself looked lovely. The fire-engine red Dior couture gown, with thin straps, a ruffled neckline, and a cinched waist that opened up into a floor-length skirt, is one of our favourite looks of a celebrity wearing red on a red carpet, which was once considered a faux pas.

Rihanna, 2017

When it comes to fashion, Riri comes to play and slay. We all know her and love her for being the best-dressed Met Gala attendee but here, you can see her doing justice to her MVP status on the 2017 Cannes red carpet. The custom Christian Dior couture gown seems like Dior's play on the humble white shirt dress. But it's the chunky jewels and those sleek white sunglasses that bring life to it. The strapless gown with a billowing off-the-shoulder cape feels like a more modern take on Marilyn Monroe's white dress moment, which we adore!

Deepika Padukone, 2022

Out of all the saree moments that have happened at Cannes over the years, this one shall be etched in our memory forever. It's always a feel-good moment for us when an Indian celebrity is spotted at Cannes, especially when they're dressed to the nines in an Indian designer. A Sabyasachi outfit rarely disappoints, and a Sabya saree raises the stakes even higher. This stunning sequined number was inspired by the colours of the Bengal tiger, a fitting tribute to Sabyasachi's home state. We love how the strapless sweetheart blouse and Julia Fox-inspired black swan eyeliner combined to create a traditional meets modern saree look, perfect for a global icon like Deepika.

Sonam Kapoor, 2018

This is an icons zone only. Truth be told, unbiased opinion is that Sonam Kapoor Ahuja's Cannes looks shall remain iconic forever (mind you, iconic in capitals). After much deliberate discussion in our brain, we were able to declare a single look as our favourite—the lehenga gown moment from 2018. Only Sonam could have thought of wearing a lehenga-inspired gown at the Cannes red carpet. This Ralph & Russo off-white ensemble featured intricate detailing and a voluminous silhouette, with a choli adorned with a trail over her shoulder.

Lupita Nyong'o, 2015

This dress is from Gucci's golden couture days because nowadays, we hardly see the label making memorable fits like this one. Lupita Nyong'o's 2015 Cannes red carpet outfit looked extremely ethereal and the detailing on it was everything. Adorned with hours worth of hand-embroidered crystals, beaded floral embellishments and silk flowers, we loved how Lupita opted for a green hue and ditched tried-and-tested basic colours.

Blake Lively, 2016

Blake Lively's 2016 Cannes appearance was under the radar of many tabloids since that was her first outing with her baby bump peeking through. She had said, 'I'm just gonna dress like I'm not pregnant' and we have to say, pregnant or not, the blue Atelier Versace gown was a sight for the sore eyes. The gown was completely covered in beads that sparkled in the flashlights of the cameras, from the single off-the-shoulder strap to the floor-length skirt that flowed behind her to form a train, every detail screamed high fashion glam!

Kate Moss, 2016

Kate Moss's look is the prime example of how your dress doesn't have to be big, poufy or embellished for your look to stand out.  Kate's one-shouldered vintage Halston dress was in an elegant shade of crimson. The Chopard earrings are the perfect sparkles to add oomph to an otherwise simple look. Additionally, we love how the makeup was kept simple to no ttake away from the drama of the loud colour and ruffled pattern.
