Not to sound like a self-acclaimed movie critique but I was expecting 'The Idea Of You' to be the rom-com flick of the summer. You know how a rom-com becomes your guilty watch and you keep going back to watching it on rewind when you are happy, sad or even lethargic because you don't want to find something else to watch? But with 'The Idea Of You', that magic didn't happen, at least for me. Of course I loved Anne Hathaway's powerful performance, how she keeps you gripped through the (not-so-new) storyline but what I loved even more about the flick was her character, Solène's beautiful home.

The home has become the talk of the internet since it was revealed to be available for rent on Airbnb. While the original home is in Virginia Highland in Atlanta, rather than California as claimed in the film, it has a very LA-chic vibe. It's cosy and lived-in, but with a touch of refinement and aspiration that suits Solène's artistic personality.

According to what we know from the internet, the production team spent two months renovating the space and giving it a Parisian meets Boho chic mid-century vibe, perfect for an art gallery owner like Solène who would know the ins and outs of the creative scene. There's loads of craftsmen-era inspired touches like wood beams and tiles, cane furniture, velvety hues of deep colours and personal touches that give it that authentic feel. The house has been on everyone's mind since they watched the move. So, here I am, giving my take on how you can recreate the eclectic but homely vibe of the home.

The Living Room

Of course, everyone recalls the living room from Solène and Hayes' (Nicholas Galitzine) first kiss. The vintage piano forte, the retro, tiled fireplace, and stacks of books piled in the back cabinet—every detail seems to belong in Solène's home. We liked how the hall was lined with cane and rattan furniture to give it that woody texture that is visible throughout the space due to the extensive use of different wood textures.

Think of adding cane and rattan furniture to bring the earthy wood effect. Check out our list here for brand reccos. See how that blue lamp brings an element of quirk and colour? Well, while we couldn’t find something similar, we feel this one from Pure Home + Living has the same vibe. Also, contrast is everything for recreating the vibes of this home. You can see velvet paired with cane furniture so don’t be shy of overdoing it and remember, it’s all in the details so accessorising with vases, books and other objects is the way to go!

The Kitchen

Although there’s not much cooking in The Idea of You, the kitchen does take centre stage for our favourite fridge scene. To be honest, more than the objects, the look of it comes from the wooden structure of it. The production team had installed wood beams and completely redid the kitchen with custom wood cabinets, Craftsman-era tiles, and window panes.

While the look of the kitchen is all focused on woodwork, think of adding some small elements to lift the look of it. Like similar transparent vases (this one from Ikea is pretty similar). To bring out the antique or vintage vibes. We love how the kitchen has an open wooden cabinet which is stacked till the top (something Indian homes can definitely relate with) and looks quite nice. Additionally, a colourful patterned rug with motifs like this one can be added to the entryway to bring some character like what we can see in the image. Also, add a few plants for that refreshing colour effect that looks great against the wooden setting.

The Dining Area

Just like the kitchen, we are the dining room in Anne’s character in The Idea Of You didn’t see much action but we honestly can’t help but notice how sync it is in with the home’s artistic yet arranged chaos theme. The floral ceiling lamp, the blue painted walls with eclectic artwork (since the protagonist is an artistic soul) and the depth brought by the velvet chairs, everything just matches with Solene’s creative yet ocean-deep personality.

Of course the dining table is wooden and features these stunning antique-looking candle stands (check out these for similar feels). The artwork at the back could be replaced with something a bit more relevant for Indian homes but all in all, a moody dining space like this one is always a welcome thought.

The Bedroom

Be it stalking her boyfriend’s whereabouts on the internet or cuddling with him, Solene’s bedroom is apt for her eclectic but poised personality. The charm of the bedroom lies on those boho touches. The colourful throw featuring hues of reds and yellows and how the blue of the pillowcases matches the one featured on the hanging at the back. The boho vibes with the hanging at the back and mismatched cushion covers brings that boho vibe one picks on through the scenes of her home in the film.

The idea is simple, don’t be scared of colour and let the colourful soft furnishings take the lead. Lighting does play a huge part here so keep that it mind. The macrame yarn hanging on the wall is the centre of attention so let the focus be on the back wall of the bed.
