Shopping trips in busy areas like General Bazaar can be super tiring, especially after all that bargaining and searching for the best deals at wholesale stores. Thanks to places like Jaggu Mithai (previously called the Balaji Jagannath Mithai Bhandar), you can fuel yourself with pocket-friendly yet delicious snacking options!
Jaggu Mithai Bhandar has been a hot-favourite among shoppers, worshippers at the Ujjaini Mahankali Devasthanam and many others for over a hundred years! No, really, this place in the bylanes of General Bazaar that started off as a single shutter outlet in 1919, is 102 years old and is currently run by the fourth generation of the OG family.
They specialise in sweets from various regions in India, like Rajasthan and Bengal, serving around 300 varieties of sweets, including uncommon ones like Kaddu ka Halwa (Bottlegourd Halwa) among others. We found favourites like Malpua, Rabri Ghevar and Chenna Gulab Jamun here. They also sell dairy essentials like freshly made Paneer that flies off their shelves at the end of the day! The best part? They make all their sweets from milk sourced from local Goshalas so the purity of the dishes is intact.
If you like pheni, they offer pre-roasted pheni fried in pure ghee that stays fresh for two months. This dish made Jaggu Mithai famous over the decades, so we recommend taking some home and devouring it with some hot milk and sugar.
Their star offering however, remains their chaat, with options like Aloo Tikki Chaat, Pani Puri, Samosa Chaat and Papdi Chaat that start at just INR 60 but can fill you up just after a single plate. Their Aloo Tikki Chaat is an absolute must-have, with their tikkis fried in pure ghee, topped with spicy ragada, chutneys and sev.
Brb, we're drooling!
