Doll Up, Naturally: This Is How You Can Make Make-Up Products At Home
All-Natural Mineral Foundation
Disclaimer, this is not a high coverage foundation. If you're used to the BB/CC cream sort of effect, you will find that this will have similar results. If tons of chemicals in cosmetics irritate your skin, you can give this a shot.
Ingredients:
Arrowroot powder (for the base)
Cocoa powder
Cinnamon
Nutmeg
Jojoba, olive, or almond oil.
Directions:
Start with 1 tbsp of arrowroot powder as the base. Then slowly add in the combination of cocoa powder, cinnamon, or nutmeg till you get your desired shade. The quantity of these powders will determine the darkness of the foundation. Next, add a few drops of oil for the "compact" look and press this mixture into a compact mould. You can start with five drops and keep adding more as required. And voila, it's ready!
All-Natural Homemade Mascara
Ingredients:
2 tbsp coconut oil
4 tbsp aloe vera gel
Beeswax
Activated charcoal for black or cocoa powder for brown
A clean mascara container
Directions:
Pour coconut oil, aloe vera gel, and beeswax, all grated, into a pan and melt it. Then add one or two capsules of activated charcoal (depending on the colour) or one or two tbsp of cocoa powder (for dark brown colour) and pour the oil. Stir well until the mixture is not runny yet not too thick. Pour the mixture into a plastic bag, pushing it towards the bottom and make a small hole (like a mehendi cone). Fill the mascara mix into an empty mascara container and leave the container upright for the contents to settle in.
Homemade Eye Shadow
Ingredients:
Arrowroot powder
Shea Butter
Cocoa Powder
Nutmeg
Dried beetroot powder
Turmeric
Allspice
Directions:
Start with 1/4 or 1/3 tbsp of arrowroot powder. The more arrowroot powder you use, the lighter and more subtle the colour pay off will be. So start with less and build up. Add your other powders and mix thoroughly until you get your desired colour. Turmeric for yellow/orange, cocoa for brown, nutmeg for nude, beetroot for red/pink, etc. You can also mix these powders to try new combinations. Once you have the mix ready, add in the shea butter and mix.
P.S. You can substitute arrowroot powder with corn starch.
Homemade Blush
Ingredients:
Arrowroot powder (base)
Beetroot/hibiscus powder
cinnamon (optional)
Directions:
Start with one tbsp of arrowroot powder. Keep adding the beetroot/hibiscus powder till you get the desired colour. Add cinnamon powder for some depth and glow, suitable for Indian skin tones.
P.S: If you go a little heavy and get a darker colour, add some more arrowroot powder to lighten the mix.
Homemade Glossy Lipstick
Ingredients
1 teaspoon beeswax
1 teaspoon shea butter/cocoa butter
1 teaspoon coconut oil
Beetroot powder/non-toxic red food colour
Cocoa powder
Cinnamon
Turmeric
Essential oil (optional)
Directions:
Start by melting the beeswax along with the butter. This will take a few seconds because we're using small quantities. Once it's melted, move the mixture away from the stove and start adding the colour pigments. For reds and pinks, experiment with beetroot and food colour, for browns and nude shades, use cocoa and cinnamon powder with a pinch of turmeric, and mix it with a drop of any essential oil. For dark pigmentation, double the quantity of the colour pigments. Lastly, fill a small empty bottle or a lip balm tube with this mix and leave it aside to cool.
