What Makes it Awesome

Once exclusive to the royalty and elite, Turf Racing in India has come a long way in terms of being accessible to the public. If you've ever fantasised about dressing in your formal best and attending the Races, you can now do it in the city, thanks to the Hyderabad Race Club!

Once part of the Sixth Nizam Mir Mahboob Ali Khan's residence, the Hyderabad Race Club at Malakpet has facilities on par with other top clubs in India. At a sprawling 126 acres, the Club was started in 1968 and still retains its old world charm with stunning antique furniture maintained alongside the club's modern amenities. The stands offer a beautiful view of the city overlooking the race tracks. The Club hosts two seasons every year - Monsoon and Winter which are ideal for the horses to perform at their best.

A typical race day at the Hyderabad Race Club consists of multiple races in a day, with 30-45 minute breaks between them. Each race lasts around a minute, giving you ample time to take in the atmosphere or go explore the Club. Racing veterans will tell you that reading up about the Jockeys and the Horses is a great way to gauge a winner. Race Day booklets are available for sale where you can find all this information along with the Race timings for the day. Do look out for some whimsical names of the horses!

Want to place a bet? There are computerised ticket counters with automated betting systems where you can place your bets for as little as INR 100. To our surprise, we found that friendly betting is completely organised and structured here. You can place your bets, watch the match and come back to collect your prize money immediately, if you've won.

We also saw that the club is well equipped with ambulances at multiple spots around the course, so any injured jockeys can be given immediate medical assistance. We love that the horses themselves are pampered and well taken care of. The Club also trains local talent in the city to produce some of the best jockeys in India. The training, veterinarian and medical facilities here are said to be some of the most superior in the world.

We recommend visiting the iconic Club to get a taste of Turf Racing. With a fully functional cafeteria, stunning views and a chance to get an up close view of gorgeous horses, your afternoon is sorted!

Pro-Tip

While you can get the best experience at the Hyderabad Race Club if you tag along with a Member, you can also attend the races by purchasing tickets at INR 500 at the club, or online. The dress code is Indian or Western formals.
