According to a report published by Truecaller in 2020, almost 8 out of 10 women in India receive harassment and nuisance phone calls at least once a week. Getting a series of shady texts or calls? Put an end to it all. Below are the three ways you can become more aware and raise concern regarding stalking and harassment which people somehow avoid reporting.

#SpeakUp With Truecaller

#ItsNotOk when it comes to stalking and phone harassment and Truecaller’s talking about these grave issues for you! Take the first step against stalking, block and report the contact on Truecaller. But why Truecaller and not just use your phone’s block system? When you block and report numbers on Truecaller, you are helping other women avoid that harasser too because of the app’s live reporting system. If another woman gets a call or SMS from the harasser, the app will automatically show how many reports that number has. If enough people block and report, the number can become auto-blocked which means it won’t even be able to ring through. One woman’s reporting can empower all women.

Think back, have you or anyone you know faced these issues? A few too many unwanted calls or someone trying to invade your privacy? Don’t ignore the trauma as just another incident that will pass by with time. Start the conversation, break the silence and #SpeakUp to take action against it. Join forces by filling the survey on Truecaller’s website and do your bit by helping them with as much information as possible.

National Commission For Women

If you feel uneasy or are intimidated by the thought of lodging a complaint, you can even fill out a complaint online. The National Commission For Women (NCW) takes up these issues with the police. They’ll ask the police department to expedite the investigation. Any woman, in any part of the country, can file their complaint.

How to Legally Deal With Stalking

If you have been subjected to stalking or phone harassment, firstly contact the police or call the Women’s Helpline number 1091. Note a few points like the gender of the person calling, their voice, the time and date of the call and be sure to drop this information with the person investigating your case. You can even try contacting your phone company to track them down. Get in touch with a lawyer to determine whether the caller's words or actions are obscene or otherwise unlawful.

Remember, you don’t really need words to report or tackle such problems, but the will to say ‘enough is enough’ and report harassment. Let’s come together and spark this movement, spread the word because #ItsNotOk.

P.S. We’re open to any and all suggestions to help women across the country battle phone harassment. If you have more suggestions, drop them in the comment below!
