Lip balms are the hair ties of the skincare world. You either choose one and make it your partner all your life, or you lose them the minute you take them out for a spin. Most times though, you have one for every location—office bag, bathroom, car, kitchen...

There are a lot of things that make up a good lip balm, and SPF is one of them. For some folks who aren't sure what it is, SPF stands for Sun Protection Factor, and the number you find next to it indicates how well the product protects the skin against the sun, and all its nasties.

And with so many SPF lip balms flooding the market, we thought we'd try out a few and tell you all about it, so that you can skip the trial and error and choose one that speaks to you.

LBB crew member Manya says, 'as someone with pigmentation on her lips, and a way of forgetting lip care, I learnt too late the importance of protecting your lips from the sun’s UV rays. I have been using The Body Shop Vitamin E lip balm for two months now, and while it settles in like any normal chapstick, that is not the end of how hydrating it is. Prior to this, I would have to occasionally use a lip mask to hydrate my chapped lips, but I have been able to eliminate that from my routine (unless I’m feeling bougie.) As far as the lip pigmentation is concerned, I did not find the lip balm to correct my lip colour back to natural, but once I gave them a good scrub, removing dead skin cells, the lip balm did a great job of keeping them maintained.'

LBB crew member Oorja says, 'I got my hands on the Minimalist's lip balm as soon as it came because of how much I love their other products. The balm does exactly what it claims, which was to fix my dry, chapped winter lips and help with pigmentation. The formula comes with an emollient balm with new-age, photostable UV filters that give your lips all day protection from the sun. It also has ceramide and hyaluronic acid to hydrate and repair lips quicker.'

I have been using this one for 3 years now, and I doubt I'll ever stop. We are all aware of Neutrogena's spectacular formulas when it comes to skincare. They're known to be good quality, hydrating and super healing. This lip balm in particular has PABA (para-aminobenzoic acid) and is fragrance free. I have extremely dry lips and can vouch for this one being not only super hydrating, but healing too, plus it lasts for a good 4 hours even if you drink water! (food, not so much) I also have pigmented lips, and safe to say, it hasn't gotten worse since I've been using this. It's affordable and one stick can easily last you a month.

Muskan from our crew had this to say, 'the Sebamed lip balm claims to have triple protection by regenerating, nurturing and defending against UV rays. While all of those seem like a bunch of big words for marketing purposes I'd say that they do mean what they claim! It does the job, plain and simple. It keeps your lips hydrated, I didn't feel the need to keep reapplying it. The product itself gets a huge thumbs up from me. However, I’m not too sure if I got it with defected packaging but I had to hold the tube in a way that the product didn’t go rolling inside as soon as I applied pressure on it. And although not too much, it is slightly more bulkier than others available on the market.

I tried this one over the past three weeks and here's what I think; the lip balm has a distinct cherry fragrance, which might come off as strong for some (it did for me). It does its job of instantly hydrating your lips, but that's about it. One sip of water, or coffee, and it's gone. It tends to leave a gloss-like finish, which feels more oil-based, and can be sticky at times. I haven't seen any lasting effects in terms of healing or protecting instead it has a tendency of creating a congealed coating on your lips, forcing you to reapply! All in all, I wish this could do more formula wise. Thumbs up for having SPF though.

LBB crew member Gaurav tried this one and this is what he had to say, 'In all honesty, I got this one only because I was told! I have no idea about lip balms (let alone which one to buy) or even the fact that them having SPF mattered. However, this one has been in my backpack for a while now, and I can vouch that it has made my lips softer over time. I'm not crazy about routinely applying it, (but once in two days, I do remember) I used the Plum lush one which doesn't have a tint to it unlike the other variants. It stays on for a good 2-3 hours and doesn't have a fragrance, which I like! All in all gets a thumbs up, especially from a person who doesn't use lip balms!'

Dinal from our crew had this to say; "I've been using this Dot & Key lip balm for quite some time now, not only because I'm a huge fan of tinted lip balms, but also because this is one of those lip balms with the highest SPF. It's easy to glide on, keeps my lips moisturised for a good 3-4 hours, has Vitamin C and E, which helps with nourishment too. I particularly love it for how much shine and plumpness it provides! It comes in 5 fruit flavours, but Cherry Pop has got to be my favourite for daily wear.'
