For any artist in the city, it’s often hard to let your creativity flow freely, or hit the good old artistic block if you’re in the wrong environment. Art residencies give you the time and space you need to let you interact with fellow artists, and help inspire you to bring out your best work. We listed out a few art residencies around India that you could visit for a unique, creative experience.

Khoj International Artists' Association

Khoj as a studio is extremely encouraging when it comes to supporting upcoming artists and has established themselves as a non-profit arts organization. They appreciate creativity and experimentation in all art forms, and they have one of the most popular art residencies in the country. Art residencies usually last a month here and they have a variety of interesting programs for artists. They have exhibition spaces, accommodation for artists, studios, a media lab and a multi-purpose space for screenings or presentations.

Tatva Centre

Tatva Centre in Goa is a pretty residency that combines a focus on art with a focus on mental and spiritual well-being. A unique concept in India, the residency uses creative mediums such as photography, painting, music and more to help cope with issues like mental health, grief counselling, addiction, eating disorders and more. They have trained psychologists and psychotherapists running the residency, who focus on a sort of holistic, creative healing.

Sanskriti Foundation

Based in Delhi, Sanskriti works towards preserving traditional Indian art practices, and cultivating appreciation for these art forms. They support young and upcoming artists through their various awards and fellowships {and they also have international residencies}, so they  encourage creativity in all forms.

Their pottery programs must be given special mention. Sanskriti Kendra is ideal for exploring sculpture, visual arts, textile designs, ceramics, architecture and more, and they provide accommodation, exhibition spaces, a library and media facilities.

What About Art

This residency in Mumbai focuses on all forms of visual art, including sculpture, installation, painting, video, amongst others. They provide specialised services for art projects, installations, production and preservation of art collections, and more. Their residency gives accommodation to curators and artists, and allows you to explore video-based projects with exhibitions, screenings and workshops.

Art Ichol

Art Ichol lets resident artists explore and collaborate in the field of creative arts. Divided into sections for writers and artists, The Maihar Heritage Home lets you experiment with ceramics and pottery, while the Amaria serves as the writers’ retreat. They have gorgeous rooms, a studio for painters, an art cafe, supplies for artists – and they take care of your basic needs as well. They even have an organic garden and a warm, encouraging atmosphere to let your creativity flow freely.

Bonus Round! Art Inn Jaipur

Art Inn offers various projects like block-printing, jewellery-making, miniature painting and traditional art and craft, blue pottery and a writing program. They have six, themed rooms {each of which are stunning} and provide basic facilities for their residents. It’s small {but beautiful} and will help you explore traditional art and craft practices better.
