Up north, Morjim has to be one of our favourite haunts — the chill and easy vibe, the luring white sand beach and delightful cafes and bars, Morjim has all the makings for a perfect getaway. In fact, one of our favourite cafe-bars from up north, has gone through a facelift and is the reason we’re spending even more time around Morjim. Base, is usually our go-to for some delicious gourmet food and cocktails and a warm yet spunky ambience.
More recently Anuj, with his international mixology creds and decades of experience in the hospitality industry has taken over and added not only new grounding energy, but also a whole load of items to the food and alcohol menu. We already loved their all day breakfast menu — now you have some additional fun, experimental additions to the entire menu — a peanut poha, recheado potatoes with poi, tandoori aalu paratha, grilled allu cakes — all of which vie for your attention and ultimately your tastebuds!
There are also all-meat or all-veg platters which are the perfect hangover cures alongside a seasonal fruit bowl. They have some yummy char grilled steaks, pizzas and we were delighted to see that they retained our favourite Thai Green Curry. Heck they even have some good old fish curry rice! We tried the delicious melt-in-the-mouth galouti kebabs, and almost lunged into food coma, saved from the latter with what they call butter chicken fries — yes with actual shredded butter chicken on the fries!
The cocktail menu is no less, there are some boozy milkshakes which Anuj highly recommends, especially if you’re on a breakfast binge! He made us the Base signature Bloody Mary and we swear, we literally ate it, it was so delicious. Semi-crushed, juicy tomatoes flooded the drink with its boozy, vodka undertones, with the mildly startling taste of hotness from the green chilli added whole. Trust us, we could go on about their alcohol menu, but would highly recommend you try for yourself (and have a designated driver for that night!)
What makes the spot even more special are their music nights — Jonathan, who himself is a musician and sound designer from Goa, programmes soulful jazz nights on Fridays. On Wednesdays, open mic nights host some wonderful jams, while on Sundays, the outside seating space hosts informal gigs with some of Goa’s best musicians playing for you.
So like we said, it’s not without reason that Base is one of our favourite haunts up north. Whether it be post-swim on a Sunday afternoon for brunch, or on a Wednesday night out with the girls, Base will make sure you have a great time!
