2017 brought a bunch of exciting new things to the city; and bakeries are high on that list. This is our curated list of sugary new places that changed our lives by turning up in 2017.

Ka's Eclairs Kafe

Ka Eclairs Kafe {yes, with a K} is a colourful and brightly-lit eatery in the Sector 18 market, Noida. This place offers salads, fries, shawarmas, sandwiches, risottos, pizzas and more, but as always, we’re biased toward dessert, so that’s what gets our undivided attention. The eclairs here are heaven, and all their desserts are Insta-worthy. This cafe also offers a range of cakes in a jar, pastries, heavenly desserts like Chocolate Nuke {it will blow your mind} and more desserts that we’re planning to try on our next visit.

Baked Love By Vatsala

Vatsala’s sweet treats have a lot of loyal takers who’d vouch for her Belgian Double Chocolate Mousse or Fresh Coconut Truffles even in their sleep. Her pastries and co. are all preservative-free, and that might have something to do with them being fluffy, gooey and totally feel-good. Desserts and cappuccino {the beans are the perfect roast} are a match made in food heaven, but it’s also the fact that this space is so comforting with its wooden interiors and miniscule flowerpots.

Chez Papillons By Bonjour Chocolates

After being in the gifting business with their luxuriously packed chocolate boxes, and gathering a lot of love for their waffles, this cafe was a natural step. The Bonjour Chocolate peeps have opened a new bakery-cum-cafe—Chez Papillons in Punjabi Bagh—and it’s a rather, erm, sweet place. Aside from the creamy chocolates and tea cakes we’ve eaten {and loved} before, they have a full-fledged sandwich-and-salad menu on offer here.

Nik Bakers

Run by a professional, Australian baker, Nik Baker’s is something of a legend in Chandigarh, and we finally have them in Delhi now.  Say hello to breakfast, cakes, sandwiches, pasta and pizzas, Nik Baker’s is a trust-worthy snack stop because everything that comes out of their kitchen is yummy. This is also the go-to place for cakes – think Rainbow, KitKat or Red Velvet – Nik’s Baker’s has an impressive repertoire of baked goodies.

Maria's Cookbook

Maria’s Cookbook is a sweet  little space tucked into Hauz Khas market that’s doing desserts, breads and coffee that’s to die for. The place is cute as a button, and the vintage, sepia-toned kind of feeling it evokes is comforting when it’s coupled with the warm, sugary aroma of baked goods. The menu, is equally compelling. They are the first ones in the city to get authentic chimney rolls from Hungary, along with a whole bunch of pies, cookie jars, sandwiches and other sweet and savoury treats.

Ice Bakery

Their menu is a sweet spread of waffles, home-made gelato, macarons, cakes and an insane amount of toppings for them all. They’ve got waffles in a bunch of variants, including maple, mango puree, peanut butter and our favourite – cinnamon butter. Choose from two sizes, and a range of toppings such as whipped cream, marshmallow, caramel popcorn {yum!}, Oreos, Nutella and nuts.  Their macarons are pretty good {we favoured the salted caramel ones the most, followed by the chocolate mint}, date and fig cake and red velvet jar. They have some interesting shakes, too, including a Parle-G cheesecake one {!}. And Nutella enthusiasts, you can stock up while you’re here, they keep mini jars, regular-sized jars and Nutella Go {Nutella with sticks – makes for a great snack on the go}.

Yoku Moku

There’s something comforting and sweet about Japanese everything. We lost our collective minds when MUJI opened and were also super-stoked about 70’s Japanese cookie experts, Yoku Moku opening up at Chanakya. One look at their confectionery stuff and you know that a lot of magic can be whipped even with the most basic sugar-flour-eggs. The comforting smell of cookies, coupled with the sight of their well-loved Cigare cookies is the closest you can get to a hug for your soul.

Theobroma

Our all-time favourite Theobroma opened, and it’s great for brekkie, sandwiches and all sorts of baked goods. This Parsi-run bakery, that first opened in Mumbai in 2004, has been delighting dessert-lovers with their vast selection of brownies, cakes, macarons, croissants and tarts ever since. After delighting Cyber Hub, they opened in Mall Of India, SDA and very recently in Defence Colony as well. They’ve certainly won us over with their gooey, delicious desserts and breakfast food.

Cake Bake Shake

This quaint, little bakery, with its warm, inviting ambience and cosy interiors is just where you’d picture spending perfect, winter mornings. Cake Bake Shake has an impressive selection of baked treats on their menu, with macarons, eclairs, jar cakes and more. Dessert lovers will enjoy their crepes and waffles {you can also make your own waffle here}.

Sparrows At Home Bakery & Cafe

A surprise Noida discovery, Sparrows At Home Cafe & Bakery is everything we wanted in Noida. It’s cosy and uses at-home ingredients to whip up a variety of breads, cakes and cookies {all preservative-free}. They’ve got scones, frittata, croissants, sandwiches, cupcakes and an extensive range of teas and coffee and from what we tried, we liked the wheat bran paneer sandwich and the kinu chiffon cake. And the taste of their perfect espresso and cold coffee still lingers in our memory.
