It was in December last year that I was gifted a plant by my Secret Santa. At first, my heart sank. Not because it was a bad gift, but because I am (ashamed to admit it) a certified plant killer. And I really didn't want the murder of another plant on my hands. But this time around I was lucky, the plant has thrived, and it totally made me want to green up my house a bit more.

So, I reached out to Cyrus, the owner of Plants World, a plant nursery in South Mumbai for his recommendations on indoor plants that are perfect for people like me: those who love plants but have a terrible track record on keeping them alive.

Here are Cyrus's top 5 recommendations of plants that can survive ALMOST anything.

Zamioculcas Zamiifolia AKA The "King of Indestructible Plants”

Sabai-Cherry Red Planter

Called the “King of Indestructible Plants”, the very popular ZZ plant /Zamia, as more commonly known, grows from big and thick rhizomes that look like potatoes. The rhizomes help them to store water under the soil and so you don't need to stress even if you forget to water this plant regularly.

Care Tip: Although they're tolerant to different kind of light conditions, they live best in bright, indirect light.

Ficus Elastica: Commonly known as the “Rubber Plant”, it is a hardy low maintenance plant. Boasting of oversized oval shaped leaves, this is a quick grower and can grow up to 100 feet tall in its natural habitat. Grown mostly as an indoor plant, it thrives in a shaded area and likes a humid moist environment.

Care Tip: Water it when the soil dries out, about once a week.

Sansevieria AKA Snake Plant

Verdi Planter

An all time favourite, the Sansevieria, also called the Snake plant or Mother in Law’s Tongue, is a slow growing and very easy to care for plant. In NASA’s “Clean Air Study”, this plant was an absolute top performer for its air purifying qualities. Sansevieria improves the air around you and even helps you sleep better. Place them in different areas of your home / office including the pantry and rest rooms.

Care Tip: Water them just once a week. They are absolute maintenance free plants to have.

Mumbai folks, Plants World has more than 10 different varieties of Sansevierias for you to choose from.

Jade Plant

Jade retains water in its round leaves, so it can sometimes survive more than a month without any attention whatsoever. "If they do get water, they start to rehydrate and grow" says Neil Mattson, an associate professor in the horticulture department at Cornell University.

Care Tip: Position it in a sunny window (south- or west-facing, preferably) and water when the soil feels dry.
