Desert Culture Centre & Museum is a wonderful museum which showcases the desert culture and puppetry! Made from one man's dream to tell culture through storytelling! Thanks to the effort of historian and teacher NK Sharma for making this wonderful place and giving such a good platform to the ancient art of puppets!
They have a show every day for INR 100 per head from 6:30 to 7:30 PM and from 7:30 to 8:30 PM in Hindi and English. (Call them to check timings before going since they sometimes combine the show in Hindi and English). A short film gives context and history, and then puppet masters showcase the stories and characters with live music of the khartal and the Harmonium played skillfully by the musicians from the Manganiyar community.
They now have a popcorn stall too! While acknowledging that cinema was one of the reasons people forgot about puppetry. They also have a cute little souvenirs shop to take home some literature etc.
The backstage to see the puppet masters perform is also accessible to view if you ask them for the experience.
If you find your way to Jaisalmer, head over to Gadisar Lake to watch the sunset, then walk across the road to come here to catch some culture and catch a live puppet show!
