What Makes It Awesome

Dainty embroidery, charming silhouettes, and some fusion Indian wear are all part of Payal Pratap’s ready-to-wear line, Umbar, an online store for fabulous women's wear.

Known for clothes that come with a delicately aesthetic, vintage and feminine vibe, designer Payal Pratap (you may also know her husband, designer Rajesh Pratap Singh) decided to extend her design sensibilities to a prêt line. Called Umbar, the collection has its own website, which means you can start shopping right about now.

Beautiful embroidery is a big part of The Islands In the Sun collection. Think hearts, bold florals, and a lot of old fashioned cross-stitched embroidery (remember those pretty roses embroidered on white handkerchiefs and pillowcases?). Peasant tops, skater dresses, tunics, long shirts and collar dresses—they all come with Payal’s signature embroidery and stitched to perfection. The easy-breezy resort wear collection is suited for the day, though their floral embroidered top and the pleated cocktail skirt in black that we spotted would be perfect for after-hours dressing, too. Payal has used a mix of cotton, Chanderi and denim to create pieces that come with a relaxed silhouette.

What we loved about Umbar’s offerings is the fact that the delivery period is only a week at most—unlike other designer wear which is likely to make you wait for up to a month to arrive.

Price: Starting at INR 2,950

What Could Be Better

We do wish there were bigger sizes or a custom option though (they do have the XL option for some pieces, but those only go up to a US size 12 to 14). Though there are a few collared tops and wide-legged summer pants that are in and around the INR 3,000 price tag, the rest of the collection is rather pricey, so we’re thinking of saving up a bit of before splurging here.
