In the current entrepreneurial climate, you’ll run into a fashion designer every corner you turn, somewhere in between the blogger and the app-developer. But, few will make you want to stop and shop a while. Introducing up-and-comer Bhaavya Bhatnagar, effortlessly taking over our wardrobes, one structured separate at a time.

Her story doesn’t involve an obvious progression to fashion. Born to a doctor and an engineer, she was all set to take over her father’s business, and therefore equipped herself with an Economics degree. A little experimenting with a summer shirt line in college one year, and she had a calling on her hands. After a fast-tracked stitching course {3 days}, and a three-week portfolio prep time, she successfully applied to FIT. Fast-forward four years, and she is arriving. Monotones, feminine structures, unique embroidery and understated elegance; here’s why we struck gold with her separates, or rather with her, perhaps a dull bronze.

Seeing Separates: What to invest in

I own more anarkalis than jeans, and more saris than sweaters. Blame it on the biggest fashion trend this season - getting married. But Indian clothes are restrictive, and don’t allow for much in terms of versatility. Here’s how she’s redefining that pattern. Her line of statement blouses are sold solo - be it a black blouse with oxidised silver mixed-media embroidery, or a dual toned blouse with handcrafted pearl embroidery - and she can make you a sari to match, if you wish to order one. Most importantly, she can do a bunch of them in multiple colours, so you get maximum mileage out of your blouses. She’s also a self-confessed jacket junkie {by junkie we mean she wears blazers in the summer also}, and her initial design plan involved just jackets. She draws a lot of inspiration from history, especially the 18th century, therefore armour and its structured silhouette resonates across her line of blazers; metallic silk jackets with exaggerated cuffs, jackets with handcrafted brass filigree shoulder yokes, and black blazers with gold beaded collars - definitely trailblazers!

For me, what stands out is her personal reflection in every piece. Since her style is acutely similar to what she designs, each piece looks like a labour of love. An extension of her personal style is evident in her colour palette; blacks, whites, greys, browns and pops of red. The greatest news about her choice of shades - they’ll always be in style.

Notes in Our Little Black Book | Bhaavya Bhatnagar designs both Indian and Western wear, with an emphasis on more formal clothing. Strict with structure, with undertones of softness, her constructed jackets and statement blouses are classic pieces to invest in.
