Samoolam is an NGO that works towards women empowerment by the way of employing them to make home decor, jewellery and stationery out of crochet. A team of 100 plus women from rural India now work in their Gaya factory making bright baubles.

Yarn For More?

Working with rural women to impart skills and open up employment opportunities sounds like a great plan on paper but the going was anything but easy for the founders of Samoolam. Right from convincing the men of the family to allow their housebound wives to take up a craft to working out of a tiny garage, the brand has indeed come a long way. Today, they’re an army of 130 women with participation from the surrounding villages only growing. The product offerings have gone from minuscule earrings to experimenting with journals, clutches and colour-blocked stoles

We’ve visited Samoolam kiosks at Dastkaar and other smaller pop-up exhibitions around the city but their new Diwali collection made us sit up and take notice. So, we’re taking our time showing you around everything we’re eyeing at the moment. This choker is going right into our cart along with these cute tealight covers.

Also, totally crushing on these earrings and this gajra that’s going to attend a lot of Diwali parties with us.

You can browse through the entire collection on their Facebook or website get that shopping cart festival ready.

So, We're Saying...

The lights might have been made specially for the festive season but we love that these versatile knick-knacks have an evergreen quality that will make them a great addition long after Diwali’s gone.

Keep these sparkly lights on in your balcony or just wear this necklace with a boring Monday outfit to brighten things up – Diwali or no Diwali.
