A homemaker and a mom of a 2 ½-year-old, Smriti Rastogi is quite an inspiration! Why? Because she took her passion and made it into an enterprise way back in 2014. She started Knotting Hills, based on her love for Macrame and after a break post the baby, she’s reprised it again and gone back to her artwork. When I was looking for indie products as gifts, I chanced upon Knotting Hills and decided to find out more about a craft that’s almost forgotten and a person who’s keeping it alive through her work. She integrates her designs with wooden beads, metal charms, semi-precious stones and beads, seed beads and Swarovski elements as well, giving each piece a unique finish. Her main products are earrings and necklaces but she has also worked on commissioned bookmarks, key chains and bag tags.
Her designing inspiration is very eclectic and relies on nature in a big way. She incorporates elements of nature along with various art forms like Bandhani, embroidery like phulkari flowers. She finds inspiration in seasons and is planning to do something related to textiles like Ikkat since the art is very similar to handweaving. In knotting or macrame, a textile or fabric is formed but making a series of knots is when it emerges into patterns. It's a form of handweaving and it takes one knot at a time to develop an artwork, which is why I found each piece extremely intricate. I not only found perfect handmade gifts, but I also ended up shopping for myself. As we delve into the concept of Vocal for Local, finding handmade products made with love is such a great way to support artisans and artists.
