Like every other person, I decided to embark on my self-care journey in 2020, and one of the purchases I made then was a Gua Sha. After seeing multiple raving reviews I was convinced that using this stone is how I was going to achieve a jawline, without tiring myself out with workouts. I purchased a Gua Sha made of rose quartz stone, I made sure that it came with an authenticity certificate for the stone as well. One of the ways you can tell if your purchase is made of the real stone or not is by the temperature of the stone, a real stone will naturally feel cool and soothing against the skin.
Gua Sha For Face: Is It Worth Using? Everything To Know & Which Ones To Buy
How To Use Gua Sha
To use a gua sha, you need to make sure you're using a facial oil so that your gua sha glides on your face effortlessly without tugging on your skin and potentially damaging it. Avoid using moisturisers and serums as they tend to get absorbed in your skin quickly and fail to lubricate your skin properly.
Gua Sha Massage
Gua Sha, which translates to scraping, is an ancient technique that is being used to smoothen out wrinkles and reduce puffiness. While I'm not sure if it helps with the former, it definitely helps with the latter if your tool is cool enough.
What I like about it is that this one tool can effectively help massage your entire face, which I wouldn’t even think of doing otherwise. You can lift your cheeks, eyebrows, massage your forehead and even your neck. For the sake of better understanding I've labelled the image above to describe the parts of gua sha.
Use the angular part for your cheekbones, jawline and eyebrow area. Use the flat side for your cheeks and the curved side for your neck and forehead. To use the gua sha optimally for your face, make sure it's at an angle that is between 15° to 45° instead of 90°. This maximises the contact of the tool with your skin and makes sure it's not too harsh on your skin and doesn't cause any bruising. While massaging, make sure you take the gua sha in one direction about four to five times. Apply soft to medium pressure, according to your comfort, but don't be too harsh with it.
Gua Sha Benefits
When I bought a gua sha for myself, I envisioned having a chiselled jawline and losing my double chin, and while that was a farfetched goal that I made myself believe I'd achieve by massaging a stone on my face, it does have quite a few benefits that made me keep coming back to it.
Lymphatic Drainage: This is by far the biggest benefit of using a gua sha. The lymphatic system of your body collects extra fluids. Gua sha massage is directed towards the lymph nodes and can eliminate toxins, fluids and waste naturally. It helps to improve the quality of your skin and also temporarily makes your face look slimmer as it drains excess fluid.
Increase Blood Circulation: Any sort of massage is bound to increase blood circulation in that area and same goes for your face. Better blood circulation translates to healthy and glowing skin!
Temporary Lift: The massage does make you feel snatched, while it's only due to lymphatic drainage, it does make you feel like you just scooped up the right parts of your face.
Relaxing: If nothing, I go back to gua sha-ing my face because of how relaxing it feels. It is a massage and all massages are related to a sense of relief; it's a good feeling to have.
