On the foot steps of the enlightened Jama Masjid, Delhi, there rests the Sufi Shrine of Hazrat Sarmad Shareef. Legend has it that Sarmad was reciting beautiful verses as a sword beheaded him. The Sufi poet picked up his head, walked up the mosque stairs, performed his final prayers and departed to heaven.
It is said that even in death, the saint demonstrated a miracle. After the decapitation, the saint picked up his disjointed head and danced on the steps of the Jama Masjid before laying to rest.
The mutual attraction between him and a Abhai Chand, a hindu boy in the city made him quit his trade and became a naked fakir. This act of homosexuality and nakedness pissed the then King Aurangzeb leading to his beheading.
The whole anecdote is available in the Shrines Book Outlet at INR 40 both in Hindi and English.
Popular among newly weds and lovers, the not so famous Shrine is amidst some record playing and tea selling shops.
Next time you visit Old Delhi, do pay a tribute to the Fakir and don't forget to leave a chit with the name of your loved one written π
