Salads, Pastas & Even Brownies: 6 Places That Do Food That's Both Healthy & Tasty

Jia posted on 04 July

Finding a healthy snack that can curb your mid meal munchies, prevent an afternoon slump and stop you from binging mindlessly on popcorn is hard. Trust me when I say that I have scoured online retailers, spent hours at grocery stores and tried my hand at making food that is healthy and delicious. All of us are constantly pressed for time and while baking might be therapeutic, it isn’t always possible. Here are a few of my favourite snack/dessert options for when you need a quick pick-me-up, post workout snack or just something delicious to nosh on.

Greenr Cafe

Nimai + Greenr Cafe make for the perfect afternoon at Shahpur Jat and if you visit, I think you might agree with me. It’s always #meatlessmonday at Greenr Cafe and if you are looking to turn vegetarian for a day or two in the week, this would be a great way to start. The cafe upstairs has wholesome Buddha Bowls, zucchini pasta, smoothie bowls, vegan burgers and delicious coffee from Blue Tokai. It is a great space to work out of in the daytime and they serve the best juices and also have single origin chocolate if you need something to nosh on while you type away.

Altitude Cafe

The cafe gets a ton of natural light in the daytime and is decorated beautifully with terrariums. This Meharchand Market establishment got a menu overhaul recently under the  guidance of Chef Suby Das and we couldn’t me more excited. The gluten free Ragi Pizza is perfectly baked, thin crust and leaves no room for guilt. The menu has a bulletproof coffee in the beverage section. I recommend that you try this at least once. Yes, the coffee has butter but it will reduce the jitters and enhance cognitive abilities and mental clarity. The deli section downstairs has a comprehensive selection of cheeses, tapenade, breads and more. Its a great place to visit with a friend and they are open for lunch and dinner.

Smitten Bakery

When this girl with a prolific career in journalism gave it all up to start Smitten, we were very excited to see what she had in store for us. She put on her apron and her gloves and began baking the most exquisite desserts the city had seen. Although most of her recipes are decadent and contain flour and eggs; she does have a few healthy alternatives for the conscious foodie. She launched her Almond Butter Raspberry Chocolate Blondie- a treat too pretty to eat and sweetened with organic coconut sugar. Sounds delicious, doesn’t it? Well it is gluten free, vegan and free from processed sugars.

If you’ve ever eaten a Lara Bar, you will love everything about this homegrown brand. Made with the best ingredients and a whole lot of love, the Bareball is the tastiest thing to have hit shelves lately. They come in four variants- heart, brain, eyes and muscle. I can’t pick a favourite but if I absolutely must- it would be ‘the brain’ with almonds, dates and cardio protective coconut oil. At just about 81 kcal per pop, these babies are a great alternative to your afternoon snack or post workout snack. Carry them in your gym bag or leave them in the fridge at work for the post lunch slump.

V Bakeshop

Cake for breakfast? Yes, please. Make that two. I found out about V’s Bakeshop when I was looking for grain free alternatives to help me with my cravings. I brought home a Chocolate Coconut Cream Pie and the brownies. She makes some cookies with whey, if you want extra protein. All the products {except for the granola/muesli} are vegan, gluten-free, grain free and contain no added sugar. The raw cacao banana loaf is the healthiest item on the money. It has no grains, no butter and sweetened with a tiny bit of raw honey.

Salad Days

If you are craving some ‘sweet greens’ after your trip from the States, call Salad days to fix you up with a salad. The menu is comprehensive with cold pressed juices, smoothies, home-brewed iced teas and salads. I’ve tried their chicken and legume variants in the past but couldn’t get enough of the Crab Meat & Mango salad. I would happily order it for lunch every day of the week.
