9 Types Of Heels That Belong In Your Closet!

If you’re anything like me, a new pair of shoes probably makes you feel like everything is right with the world again (at least temporarily). We grew up watching Carrie chase that high in Sex and the City and watch her strut in those high heels all over New York City. Even though a pair of Manolo Blahniks remains a dream for most of us right now (someday, I promise myself), there’s no reason we can’t chase the same high as Carrie. And what’s best? We can now do it from the comfort of our beds. Here’s the only how-to you’ll need to buy a pair of heels online and not regret it.

Some of the things to keep in mind for maximum comfort are ankle support and front strap. If you’re broad footed, I would suggest going for a broader front strap to avoid pain to your little toes. If you’re clumsy or know that you’ll be walking on uneven surfaces (an outdoor venue with grass, for example), get something with ample ankle support and avoid the sandal-style. If you’re flat-footed, I would recommend buying a lower-height heel, but if you still want to go for it, I would suggest try out a pair that someone with your size already has.

Let’s dive in!

Types of Heel Shapes

This is probably the most important deciding factor in whether you’ll be able to walk all day in those heels or not. Even though designers are now coming up with various different types of heels, broadly, here are the types you’ll come across.

Block Heels

This is widely considered as the most comfortable heel type, and it is because it lets the body weight be distributed across the foot evenly rather than on one slim point. These are also known as chunky heels, which continues to be a major shoe trend for 2023.

This can be a alternative to block heels if chunky is not your style, as it is not as slim as stilettos, but still pretty sleek while also providing you the block heel comfort. In this type, the heel starts with a wide base and tapers to the slimmer point.

Flared Heel

This heel is exactly what it sounds like, it has a narrow base and flared to a wider surface higher towards the end. While it can be a little hard at first to get used to the balance of this heel, once you’ve got it, it is super comfortable. I would suggest wearing them around the house for a couple of days before taking them out for a spin.

According to me, this is the mother of all heel types and absolutely has magical powers. If you manage to find the comfort in wearing stilettos all day, it makes all your Devil Wears Prada dreams come true. If you’re new to heels, I wouldn’t recommend starting with these, but if you love a challenge, go for it! They were my first pair of heels, and now I can wear any type.

Wedge Heels

This is probably everyone’s first pair of heels. It’s comfortable, solid, and doesn’t need a lot of getting used to. It also does not put too much pressure on your front foot. While personally not my favourite (I tend to twist my ankle more in these), these are a great initiating into the world of heels, and can be the perfect addition to complete a casual look.

Special Mention: Decorative Heel

This one is basically where you can do the whackiest stuff. There are no set rules for what these heels can look like, they can be circles with a flat bottom, zig-zagged, or triangular, the possibilities are endless. Since the styles can be so varied, so can the level of comfort. But if you like experimenting with your wardrobe, go for it!

Heel Height

This is as straightforward as it sounds. I usually prefer anywhere between 3 to 4 inch heels for everyday use, but you can choose to pick something as low as 1.5 inch or as high as 9 inches (some brands even offer higher-heel options than, remember when Lady Gaga wore 24 inch heels?!) Here are some of the heights you can filter your choices with online.

Kitten and Low

These usually have options that have a 1.5 to 2-inch heel and can be great for everyday wear and if wearing heels causes you too much pain but you still want a pair.

Mid Height

These usually stay between 3 to 4 inches and are a great option for everyday. You get ample elevation, without putting too much strain on the balls of your feet.

High and Very High

This is for the true heel connoisseurs and is absolutely my favourite type of heel to buy. These are all option above 4 inches, and for the really high ones, they have more than 7 inches heel height.
