Punjabiyat is a boutique farm stay in Gurdaspur that literally lets you have a field day. Every culture-proud Punjabi needs to visit this gem for bullock cart rides, butter chicken, cycle rides on dusty pathways and bright, yellow mustard fields. Also, the sunset here is a sight to behold.

What Makes It Awesome

There’s little to rival the feeling a warm, hospitable farm stay evokes. The joy of throwing yourself in a rugged, tube well bath as opposed to a well-sculpted pool or eating perfectly-charred tandoori chicken with your bare hands is often underrated. It’s only when you come face-to-face with these small, imperfect situations do you realise what you’re missing.

This adorable, made-to-look-rustic property recreates Punjab’s vibrant culture with just the right amount of luxury thrown in. Local villagers have used building techniques they’ve used for years–the mud cottages are all made from locally-sourced materials, and the meals are prepared from produce gathered from a 50-mile radius. The rooms are aesthetically done, and come with a deck to idle away evenings with chai and chakhna, and the private terrace is perfect for stargazing. We also like that every room has ample sunlight streaming in.

When you find yourself here, sign up for a trip to the dairy farm, hop over for a cooking class that focuses on Punjabi delicacies, or visit the Sikh History Museum. If we were you, though, we’d just spend the mornings listening to the song of the birds and afternoons splashing in the tube well. All this might remind you of those Bollywood classics, and we totally think you should take cheesy photos with your dupatta waving across mustard fields because, hey, why the hell not?!

The wagah border is an hour away, just in case you proud Pindians feel the need to venture out. Or NOT.

What Could Be Better

Since these are only four, standalone cottages, getting accommodation during peak season might become a problem if you don't book way in advance.

Pro Tip

If you’re planning on an Amritsar trip, we insist you spend a night here. The gazillion stars at night will make you fall in love with life all over again.
