The meal starts cutely with a DIY sambal - ingredients arranged around a bamboo mortar and pestle. The Vietnamese iced kopi makes for great company while you tweak and pound in the quest of the right notes - a smattering of garlic, a squeeze of lime, watch yourself with that chilli oil!
Now, there are two ways to navigate through the treasure trove that the Jom Jom menu is:
You can make a meal of the smaller plates and go with the raw mango salad, chicken laksa bao, murtabak {Malay baida roti} and satay.
Or, you can go to town with the lamb rendang and nasi lemak {aromatic coconutty rice, served with fried chicken, a boiled egg, spicy shrimp paste, peanuts}. The slow cooked spiced meat curry is seriously good, and pairs wonderfully with both, the bao and the flaky roti canai. I am partial to the nasi lemak for brightening up homesick student's days with wholesome warmth.
Either way, save space for the cloudy coconut cheesecake.
