Shortcut

Rather inconspicuous, Malabar Taste Buds is tucked away in a small lane in Gurgaon. However, it’s quite a find since it serves up true, home-style Malabar food at very reasonable prices.

A Bit Of Everything

Walk into this canteen-style café that’s neat and clean like most South Indian joints usually are. Don’t miss the miniature boat from the Kerala Boat Race fame, except this one is made of all the spices used here. The chef {and owner} is a lady who’s happy to take you through the menu, adding a very home-like touch to the experience.

The best way to have your first taste of Malabar is by sampling their Thali; they have a veggie one and one with fish and chicken curry. We loved the thoran and the moru curry, with appams or parottas.

So Nice We Went Twice

The Chicken 65 and Mutton Fry make yummy starters, however the mains, which include Malayalee staples, like Egg Appam, are perfect for breakfast. While you’re there, definitely get yourself some Puttu – soft rice cakes with coconut – and a mutton dosa to go with the Egg Appam.

Some of their other mains that deserve a mention include the Mutton Roast, Fish Mango Curry, Karimeen and Konchu {prawn} Pollichathu style, which is a coating of their signature masala. There is as much choice for vegetarians, we loved the Vegetarian korma {best had with appams} and the Thakkali Fry, or tomatoes cooked with green chilies and curry leaves.

For your third meal there, stick with the biryanis – they have 8 of them, from tenderloin to fish and prawns.

So, We're Saying...

Head to Malabar Taste Buds for a feast – Kerala style!
