A family-run ice cream brand, Tangelo, happens to come out of the Malhotra’s Gurgaon home, but it’s anything but the usual. To begin with, their 100-plus flavours are all egg and preservative free. And, tubs of this delicious goodness also come in vegan and safe-for-doggie versions.
Pawan greets you with the warmest, uncle voice and has a story that’s as sweet as the ice creams they make. “I have always loved ice cream,” he tells us. In his quest for the perfect scoop, he travelled far and wide and realised that people deserved better than those saccharine, syrupy concoctions that brands were selling.
In his journey, he found himself reaching out to Bina, his wife, to fine-tune the flavours and his daughter, Ayesha for a young-person perspective on everything branding and marketing. “When I set out, I was sure about very few things. I knew that I wanted a model where I could make ice creams from wherever I was. I knew they had to be mindful of people’s health concerns, and be made using fresh ingredients. This is what led me to start Tangelo,” he says. 100% natural, low on sugar and also available in lactose-free variants, most of these cold treats can lighten up a dull day without weighing heavy on your conscience.
We learn that the strawberries in the ice cream are sourced from Mahabaleshwar, and the oranges are grown in the Malhotra backyard. This explains why Tangelo’s Alphonso & Green Chilli is the taste of fresh mangoes from the first bite. Their other bestsellers include Salted Caramel, Dark Chocolate With Tangerines and Coffee With Roasted Almonds.
We’re ordering their Mango & Tender Coconut ice cream cake (yes, they do these and heart and cake-shaped ice creams) along with some feel-good scoops for our hungry pup. P.S. Few can argue against ice creams’ power to melt the coldest heart.
