Movies have been a constant source of entertainment, and we keep going back to them for an instant dose of dopamine, even when they have nothing to offer other than a good laugh and great meme material (Welcome and Hera Pheri come to mind?). But more than that, they have the ability to comfort us, give a utopian view of reality and hope for a better world, teach us a little something or just serve as an escape.

How we watch and consume content is a deeply personal experience. ‘Cinephiles’ sit and scratch their heads trying to analyse a movie, while some watch it just for fun. For me, it’s both. I’ll hit pause multiple times, rewind just to hear a dialogue again, or gush over camera movements and lighting (perks of being a journalism student, I guess?). Sometimes, all logic goes out the window, and it’s just me, my big bowl of popcorn and a cheesy rom-com. So, you can think of me as someone who likes to watch anything and everything—I’ll watch Interstellar one day and try to make sense of it, and watch K3G the next. And so, obviously, I can’t wait to see what this year has in store for us.

2023 looks like a promising and exciting year with SRK and Anne Hathaway making comebacks, and movies directed by Christopher Nolan and Greta Gerwig lined up. But this isn't just another list featuring titles like Pathaan, Pushpa, Barbie, and Oppenheimer. While these are interesting movies we’re looking forward to, here's a bunch of movies you might not have heard of, but deserve all your love this year.

Killers Of The Flower Moon

Killers of the Flower Moon narrates the story of the murdered members of the Osage Tribe in 1920s Oklahoma and is adapted from a book of the same name written by David Grann. The director, Martin Scorsese, is back with his long-time collaborators, Leonardo DiCaprio and Robert de Niro. This is the sixth film where DiCaprio and Scorsese have come together, and the duo has never disappointed before. What remains to be seen is whether Leo and Robert will win another Oscar for their roles in the movie.

Genre: Crime drama

Directed By: Martin Scorsese

What We’re Excited About: While Scorsese has aced different genres with classic movies about wise men and gangsters, he is experimenting with a new genre this time with his first-ever Western film set in the American Old West, and we can’t wait to see how that unfolds.

The Super Mario Bros. Movie

While several attempts have been made to adapt Nintendo’s celebrated video game into a feature film, The Super Mario Bros. Movie particularly stands out for its true-to-life characters and voice overs by Chris Pratt, Anya Taylor Joy and Jack Black. The film will follow Mario and his brother Luigi’s quest to save a captured princess, which is also what the game was about.

Genre: Comedy/Adventure

Directed By: Aaron Horvath & Michael Jelenic

What We’re Excited About: Since most of us have played this video game, the film is sure to evoke nostalgia, and we can’t wait to be transported back to our childhood.

Sam Bahadur

Sam Bahadur is based on the life of Sam Manekshaw, who served as the Chief of Army Staff during the 1971 Indo-Pakistan war. After Uri and Sardar Udham, there’s no one better than Vicky Kaushal to take up this role, and with films like Raazi and Talvar to her credit, you can trust Meghna Gulzar to deliver a befitting tribute to the chief.

Genre: Biography

Directed By: Meghna Gulzar

What We’re Excited About: Along with Vicky, we are looking forward to seeing the Dangal sisters—Sanya Malhotra and Fatima Sana Shaikh—back together on screen.

King Of Kotha

2022 was big for Dulquer Salmaan with Sita Ramam. This year, too, looks bright for him and we are super excited! According to the actor, King of Kotha will be a power-packed, masala film with catchy songs, powerful dialogues and elevated sequences. Along with him, the film boasts big names like Aishwarya Lekshmi and Gokul Suresh in leading roles.

Genre: Action

Directed By: Abhilash Joshiy

What We’re Excited About: Dulquer Salmaan is taking a break from romantic movies and can be seen in a rugged gangster look for this one. We approve!

Wonka

Roald Dahl is a favourite across generations and his stories have shaped a huge part of our childhood. One character that we will always associate with him is Willy Wonka, and Wonka will take us on his adventures prior to opening the world’s most famous chocolate factory. Bonus? Timothee Chalamet has donned this hat and is set to win our hearts all over again.

Genre: Musical/Fantasy

Directed By: Paul King

What We’re Excited About: This is going to be Timothee’s first time singing and dancing on screen, making it all the more worth the hype.

Dunki

We’re always excited to witness Shah Rukh Khan’s magic on screen. But what happens when the best actor in the country joins forces with one of the best directors? You get Dunki. Add to that, Tapsee Pannu’s unmatched finesse. It’s a blockbuster in the making if you ask us. The film comically traces how Indians use the ‘Donkey Flight’ to illegally immigrate to countries like the US and Canada. While a teaser was released recently announcing the film, it is likely to hit the big screen in December.

Genre: Comedy/Drama

Directed By: Rajkumar Hirani

What We’re Excited About: SRK

How Do You Live?

The best in the anime business, Studio Ghibli, is back with yet another epic film this year. How Do You Live? is directed by legendary filmmaker Hayao Miyazaki, who is also credited with creating the Oscar-winning anime movie Spirited Away. Inspired by a 1937 novel of the same name, the movie tells a coming-of-age tale of a young boy who confronts life's inevitable changes with help from his uncle. The movie will include fantasy elements, which we can bet will be a treat. It is all set to hit theatres in Japan in July of this year, and, sadly, might be Miyazaki’s last film.

Genre: Adventure/Family

Directed By: Hayao Miyazaki

What We’re Excited About: Watching Miyazaki cast his spell on screen after 10 long years since The Wind Rises released in 2013.

Jodi

After Diljit’s recent witty remark that he only does one movie in a year, we are all the more excited for Jodi. With Nimrat Khaira as the co-star, a romantic storyline, and music composed by Tru Skool and Dosanjh himself, the movie is going to be a delight to watch. After much delay due to the pandemic, it will finally release in May of this year.

Genre: Romantic-comedy

Directed By: Amberdeep Singh

What We’re Excited About: This is kind of going to be Diljit’s comeback to Punjabi cinema, since his last movie released in 2016.

The Archies

Well, don’t I have a lot of nerve putting The Archies on this list! But wouldn’t it be fun if the star cast comes out wearing a ‘Nepo Baby’ t-shirt like Hailey Bieber? While the debate around nepotism is never-ending, Zoya Akhtar giving them a chance makes us believe in the movie and its cast. It is a Bollywood adaptation of the beloved Archie Comics set in the backdrop of 1960s India. It is a story of young adults, their friendships, first loves and rebellions, and will release on Netflix this year.

Genre: Comedy-drama/Musical

Directed By: Zoya Akhtar

What We’re Excited About: The film is a shift from Akhtar’s relatable content (was ZNMD relatable, though?) and we’re looking forward to seeing whether it was worth the risk.

2018

2018 is based on the devastating Kerala floods that severely affected the state. The teaser was recently released and was chilling, to say the least. With Tovino Thomas in the lead and a powerful storyline, the movie will surely do justice to the survivors of the disaster.

Genre: Thriller

Directed By: Jude Anthany Joseph

What We’re Excited About: It’s never easy to present a disaster like this on screen. We’re looking forward to seeing how Jude and his team have tackled this challenge.
