All of you looking at making that 'Goan holiday on a budget' a reality (especially the accommodation bit), can now breathe a sigh of relief. We’ve found hostels, ranging from basic ones to slightly fancier versions with key-cards and air-conditioning, that'll let you crash for the night without forcing you to break the bank. Woot woot. You can now spend more on beers and less on beds.

Old Quarter

The Old Quarter hostel is located in the oldest Latin Quarter of Asia called Fontainhas in Panjim. So not only do you get to stay in a beautiful area, with quaint and colourful buildings, but live in a property that is 200-years-old itself. You can hang out at their cafe that doubles up as a co-working space, in the process helping you meet a lot of fellow travellers, as well as peeps from Goa who work out of here. And mostly, they are all happy to share a coffee/beer over conversations. The walls of the place are artfully painted and you wouldn't want to miss out on clicking pictures of the place.

Old Quarter has dorms, as well as private rooms with wi-fi, hot water, breakfast and even bicycles on rent and with rates starting at INR 500 and upwards for a bed.

Woke Hostel

This Greece-themed hostel in Arpora has AC dorms starting at INR 770 including two private rooms that are priced between INR 2,000 and INR 2,900 depending on the season. We love the vibe here, the general cleanliness and pretty decor with its teal furniture, a slackline, hammocks and swings. They offer affordable thalis for lunch, dinner and complimentary breakfast for INR 150 every day. Oh, and you can sign up for pub crawls, heritage walks, beer brewing trips, night food walks, flea market tours and other workshops with them.

Jungle

Another one in Vagator, this one is by the Hostel Crowd folks who also run Summer in Palolem and Old Quarter in Fontainhas. Enveloped by a forest and with lots of terraces, this one gives a feeling of openness at all times. They offer fast wifi and free brekkie as well.

The rates in the dorm start at INR 500 but can go up to INR 1,300 to INR 1,600 in the last week of December. You can sign up for morning yoga, BBQ get-togethers, rooftop movies or kick back at the Bombay Roasters Cafe with fellow Jungle dwellers. Have privacy issues? They’ve got rooms as well with prices starting at INR 2,000. The best part about the place is that beaches of North Goa are around 5 minutes away by two-wheeler from the property.

Pappi Chulo

One of the quirkiest looking backpacker hostels, Pappi Chulo is your best bet if you’re travelling solo and want to keep yourself engaged in activities all around. When the demand is high (read Dec-Jan), their beds in the dorms can go up to INR 2,000 to INR 2,500 but during lean season, you could be lucky to find great deals at INR 400 - INR 500 a night on the same bunk beds. The place has a trippy vibe to it with comic and psychedelic art on the walls. They have cuddly doggies, a bar, a garden, tennis and believe in celebrating festivals with great gusto. A great time with fellow road trippers/solo birds is almost guaranteed here.

Funky Monkey Hostel

A mere 4-minute walk from Anjuna beach, this hostel is perfect if you want to catch up with new people and have a comfroting stay in Goa. This hostel has a yoga space, a work space and many interactive areas, not to forget their famous yoga space. After all, who doesn't fancy a party at Curlies at night followed by a yoga sesh in the morning? They also recommend tours to Anjuna's bohemian markets with plenty of restaurants and cafes nearby. Their dorm rooms start at INR 499 and prices can go upto INR 2,499 for their private rooms.

Red Door Hostel

For those of you on a shoestring budget, this hostel offers comfort and a pleasant stay altogether. Claiming to be India's first real hippie backpackers hostel in India, this place is super famous for its Portuguese style decor, clean rooms and toilets. We also hear the outdoor bar and cafe is ultimate to relax and rejuvenate. With Anjuna beach and Vagator beach not more than 20 minutes away, this is worth the stay. Their dorm beds are priced at INR 500 onwards and just so you know, lockers will be provided, do not forget to get your own locks!

Wonderland Hostel

This hostel stays true to its name and is paradise for travellers of all kinds, if you're the outgoing one or if you're more on the reserved side or even if you're a mix of both. The place has a community atmosphere since the place is frequented by tourists from across the world who have their own ideas on life and living. Did we forget to mention that the property is flanked by greenery on all sides, has many open spaces and is a five minute walk to Anjuna flea market and a stone's throw away to Anjuna beach. The good folks here host events, parties and you can choose to engage yourself in sports, cooking or yoga classes as well. Prices for their beds start from INR 495 and the scenic beach front offers many dining options as well where you can eat and drink to your fulfillment without burning a hole in your pocket.

The Lost Hostel

The Lost Hostel in Palolem definitely deserved a mention not just because of how good it is but also because it is located in South Goa. We loved that the hostel is based on the theme of hooks, as in how we're hooked to things and concepts, such as that of a hobby, your job, or feelings. Their garden space is lush and wide, ideal to interact with new people and there's also a fridge full of fear for all you lost souls. A stone's throw away from Palolem beach, their prices start from INR 459 for their mixed dorm and the vibe is homely all around the property with colourful boho decor.

Dreams Hostel

Dreams Hostel is essentially a Portuguese house redesigned into a garden hostel that has AC and non-AC private dorms and rooms. The setup is very rustic and India with plenty of open spaces where you can laze around, meet new people, play games and create art (their walls have some fine artwork with traditional Indian motifs). The property is in Vagator and you have plenty of options to roam around north Goa and its beaches. The dorms are priced at INR 550 upwards.

Pro-Tip: If you're an artist, the owner Ravi, has a special place for you in his heart as you're more than welcome to artistically express yourself here in a way you desire.

The Bucket List Goa

Once featured under the 'Best Backpacker's Hostel In The World under 20GBP,' by MTV Travel UK, this property in Vagator is supremely known for its affinity towards alcohol. Not only do they have beer pong and other alcohol related challenges, their bar only serves craft beers and there are happy hours everyday. Known for its hippie vibe, you can sprawl yourself in the bar or take a stroll in their garden. Not too luxurious, the place has many open spaces and the prices for their dorms start from INR 399. The prices for their rooms can go upto INR 2,800.
