A plant-based diet isn't for everyone but it's something that you need to try, simply because we've discovered some amazing brands doing equally amazing plant-based products. Case in point, Hello Tempayy, the Bangalore-based food brand that's putting a flavourful twist on traditional Japanese staple, tempeh. For those unfamiliar with tempeh, it's a soy product made using fermented whole soybeans. No, not tofu (that's made with soy milk), but better. Hello Tempayy's tempeh offerings follow pretty much the same process -- soybeans cooked whole, fermented with a natural tempeh starter and after it's fermented, it's cut into bite-sized pieces and marinated in Hello Tempayy's signature flavours -- Peppery Szechuan Chilli, Spiced Tawa Masala, Simply Sriracha, and the newly launched Peri Peri and Chettinad Masala.
We went to town with the samples that were sent across to us and our favourite was the Peppery Szechuan Chilli one. We made a Mala Tempeh with it, which is our take on the spicy Mala Chicken (check out the video above for the recipe). What we liked about the tempeh is that it's seasoned well, and it tastes good. The texture is crunchy and as per the label, there are 36-38 grams of protein. It's low in carbs and for those switching to a meat-free diet, this is dairy and gluten-free too. It's a versatile ingredient for various dishes. You can pick up Tempayy Cubes which are just tempeh cubes and try out various dishes -- there are a whole lot of recipes on the website that we came across (think ghee roast, tacos, and even biryani!).
