For those of you who love all things celestial and pretty, make sure you’re out in the open tonight, and you’re looking up. Why? Because the Perseid Meteor Shower is going to be at its prime on the nights of August 11 and August 12 (until the morning of August 13). While this meteor shower is common enough, having occurred last year as well, this time around it’s going to be clearly visible thanks to the new moon. This means that the moonlight will not be brightening the skies, and it’ll be dark enough to see the trail of meteors.
While the moon is being wonderfully cooperative, the monsoon clouds, however, are likely to play spoilsport in most areas of South India. But should the rain gods have mercy and the skies clear, anyone in Bangalore, Chennai and the Western Ghats, make sure you look up this evening...you’re in for a majestic treat of meteors, fireballs and flaming streaks across the night sky. Bring out those blankets already, it’s time for a midnight picnic.
