Barcelos recently created waves with its Black Burger, which featured on the menu for a limited time period only. Now it’s time for the Red Burger to come into the limelight and from what the peeps at Barcelos tell us, this one’s here to stay.
A first glimpse of the burger reminded us of a red velvet cupcake {a red velvet cupcake with lettuce sticking out, we mean}. It was undeniably pretty and picture-perfect Instagram material, but the thought of a savoury red bun did seem a little alien. The red colour however, we were soon informed, was not a result of food colours, but came from a combination of tomato powder, beetroot juice and chili flakes.
Slightly reassured, we bit in, putting all apprehensions to rest. The juicy lamb patty, spiced to perfection, lying in a bed of lettuce and Barcelos’ special sauces hit the sweet spot. If you’re a spice seeker, pair this with the Supa Peri sauce.
Also available in chicken {it’s a filet, not a patty} and a vegetarian variant {beetroot and chickpeas patty}, they’ve pretty much covered the basic palates. The burger itself is quite massive, but surprisingly not too heavy on the tummy. It did fill us up, without making us feel like we had to sign up for a trek to work it off. We can perhaps attribute this to the fact that everything is grilled, instead of the usual fried fare. In fact, we say opt for a portion of fries or wedges to make it a complete substantial meal.
To wash down the deliciousness, they have a range of coolers, sodas and beer. We opted for the Kiwi Cooler {which was reminiscent of a chatpata aam panna} and the Peach Iced Tea {served with a stirrer holding pieces of delicious canned peaches} which are served at your table, with plumes of smoke emanating.
Barcelos will officially launch the burger on Monday, 29th June, so if you’re into trying this slice of red, we suggest you start booking your tables now.
