What Makes It Awesome

A charming resort just 45 minutes from Shillong in Meghalaya, Ri Kynjai is the perfect place to rejuvenate while doing nothing but taking in the spectacular views. Ri Kynjai, which means serenity by the lake, and exactly as the name suggests, the resort is on the banks of the picturesque Umiam Lake. With cottages dotting the tiered space, each room has its own charm. In fact, the sunrise and sunset views from the cottages are simply sublime! I wouldn’t suggest this place for the elderly and those with toddlers as it is built along the hillside and has a lot of steps and is split across multiple storeys.

It’s excellent for families with older kids as there is so much space to run around. Those who are adventure sports enthusiasts can enjoy a fair amount of trekking on the Khasi Hills and a lovely boat out to the islands on the lake. Couples can enjoy the seclusion this place offers. Each room and cottage comes with a private balcony overlooking the lake. A spa is a great option for couples to relax and indulge.

A day trip to Shillong town is well worth your while. The governor’s house, a stroll along the busy streets of the police bazaar, and a trip to the Don Bosco Museum is a great way to orient oneself to the history, culture, food and lifestyle of the North East. The highlight for me (and my seven-year-old daughter and two-year-old son) was the kid's play area on the ground floor of this museum — stocked with a slide, ball pen, cars, tricycles and a host of stacking and sorting toys!

The cathedral is a pretty landmark and worth a visit. I found that cane work and the local textile shawls are good souvenirs to bring back. And eat momos at the circle of Police Bazaar! You must make time to go walk by the lake. It’s really soothing and the sunset (or sunrise) over it, will leave you awe-struck. And Instagram all you like. That too #nofilter!

Pro-Tip

The simplest option is to fly directly to Guwahati and drive two hours along the beautiful hills to arrive at this resort. It is approximately 90 Kms from the airport. Pack plenty of loose comfortable and easy maintenance clothes! Plus, a few warm things as nights are nippy. October to January is the best time to visit; it covers the greenest time with cold crisp weather.
