Roll Trail | The Classics, The Newbies, & the Downright Delicious!

The information in this post might be outdated

Compiled by LBBD writers

Who knew that Delhi’s quintessential take-away and fast food had its humble beginnings in alleyways of good old Calcutta? Legend has it that Sheikh Hasan Reza, a clerk from Calcutta, decided that his career wasn’t getting him anywhere and he’d be better off selling the Brits some grub. In the early 1900's, the Sheikh opened a tiny stall named Nizam’s, but soon realised the Britishers didn’t like getting their hands greasy. So, he innovated, and started wrapping the rotis around kababs, and voila! The kathi roll was born.

Over the decades, new forms of the traditional roll have emerged: apart from the kathi roll, we now have the roomali roll and the doner kebab. At LBBD, we’re all big fans of rolls, and so we decided to pool together our roll resources and curate a list of places we’ve thoroughly enjoyed, and would recommend to any and every roll lover in town. We've created a map of sorts, and we’re including places our fathers’ fathers have eaten at, to more recent eateries and other hole in the wall finds.
