Leaving the promise of sun and sand to embrace the rigours of daily, city life is never a pleasant thought but to take the sting away, we suggest taking a piece of Goa back with you. Whether you intend to hurriedly pick up a bottle of local Feni on your way out or pack a weekly supply of chorizo from Mapusa Market, or you believe in gifts that will last and serve you well at home, here’s a mix of stores to hit up for unique souvenirs for friends - or even for yourself.

Mario Gallery

Mario Gallery is Goa, and everything about his work talks about the fun and colourful aspects of Goan life. Whether it is the cartoon of his ‘Poder’ the Goan breadwallah, or his everyday life sketches of feasts, chapels, carnivals, neighbourhood bars and the likes. Of course, buying any original Mario Miranda work is expensive, but now you can have a slice of his art by the way of cool, licensed merch. Mario Gallery sits pretty across Goa (including Calangute, Panjim and Porvorim) and each offer his sketches on fridge magnets, postcards, tiles, bags and many other products that make really cute souvenirs. Most products are priced between INR 400 and INR 1,500.

Marcou Artifacts

Located in the Fontainhas or old Latin quarter of Goa, the Marcou Artifacts store is the place to go to for handcrafted Goan souvenirs. The most popular here would be the bright blue, white and other painted tiles, popularly called the Azulejos that are distinctly visible all across Goa, that originally came from the Portuguese. They also have ceramic decorative items, including miniature figurines of popular characters designed by Mario Miranda, planters, crockery, wall hangings and more that can be used to create a little Goa corner at home.

Tuk Tuk

With two stores, one in Margao and one in Benaulim, Tuk Tuk has become a famous outpost in South of Goa to go souvenir shopping. It sells quirky and interesting local Goan gifts. The owner Bharti Kumar is all about promoting young local talent and is a delight to interact with whilst she helps you choose the right gifts when you're confused. From handcrafted baskets, jewellery to bags, clothes, magnets and keyrings, this shop is a must-visit.

Azulejos De Goa

Azulejos De Goa Gallery was established in 1988 in Panjim. It has the Portuguese style of painting tiles that are called Azulejos and takes it to a whole different level. They use the same style to design souvenirs, which could be the tiles as decorative name plaques or decorative plates depicting the Goan countryside. You can get one customised with your names and design and they'll happily ship it to wherever you are. Downstairs, they've got a small corner dedicated to Mario's merch. Along with all the cool finds like magnets, jewellery, posters, wall plates, mugs, coasters and the likes, the fact that it's housed in a 250-year-old Indo-Portuguese house, makes it a delight to explore.

Tailor Bird Studio

This hidden gem in Porvorim will probably fall on your way to Baga, Calangute, Anjuna and other North Goa beaches and if you're keen on getting someone typically Goan, handmade and offbeat, you have to make a pit stop at Tailor Bird Studio. While everything here is a tribute to the susegad life that best defines the local culture, we dig a certain corner that's dedicated to Amor De Goa's magnets, bags, jewellery, candles, coasters, scrubs and stationery. Gauri, the creative mind behind Amor is an old school  Goenkar who makes everything by hand. The prices are between INR 150-1k. Love Amor De Goa's products? You can also find them at OMO and Calamari in Candolim.

Paper Boat Collective

The sheer variety of sustainable crafts, accessories, clothes, skincare and ceramics here makes it a good pit-stop in North Goa for last-minute gift shopping. Their well-stocked curation of homegrown brands from across India means that you’ll always have something to pick from whether it’s handmade clothes and toys for kids, their illustrated books sourced from Indian publishers, comfy footwear, upcycled fabric jewellery and brass trinkets, printed men’s shirts, oversized dresses and kurtas or even new additions for your/you friends’ home like lamps and bed linen.

Velha Goa

If you’ve been a keen observer of architecture while walking around Fontainhas or even while passing old Goan homes in quiet villages, you’d have noticed the typical blue and white ceramic tiles that are used as wall art or as name plaques. Velha Goa is keeping this tradition alive by sourcing paints and raw materials from Portugal and creating ceramic pieces at their factory in Margao. There, trained painters create intricate, colourful designs on a range of ceramic pieces. So, you can pick up wall plates, handpainted tiles, Mario’s artworks on tiles, crockery and decor or order yourself a name plaque that can be customised for you and delivered a couple weeks after you’re back from your vacation.

Good Karma Treasure Shop

If you still haven’t jumped on to the thrifting bandwagon, let Good Karma be the reason. On your next trip to Goa, allow yourself to be charmed by all the pre-loved goodness that abounds at this Anjuna store. You can pick up all the clothes, accessories, books, footwear and upcycled goodies for a steal and help support local charities in the process. This cosy, little haven of secondhand goods has a unique collection of things and pretty much adds new stock every week thanks to all the conscientious green warriors who happily donate things from their home and wardrobes.

Thomas The Potter

This quaint new pottery studio is one of the most calming places to browse and pick up ceramics if that’s what you’re into. Located in Fontainhas, it stocks up some pretty interesting ceramics all inspired by nature. From statement ceramic pieces for your wall all ripe with texture and yummy form to quirky platters, cups, plates and more for your crockery cabinet to a lot of showpieces that look like creatures of the sea, this studio is nothing short of being a visual treat.

OMO

While you’re still walking around Fontainhas, you can also stop by at OMO, a multi-brand store that stocks up a lot of knick knacks that make for the perfect gifts. From quirky blouses and crop tops to comfy kaftans and dresses, this store isn't just big on clothes, it has an assortment of unique jewellery, footwear and bags to match.

Rangeela Goa

We love treating ourselves at Rangeela’s Assagao store that always has a never-ending array of clothes and decor that keep calling out to us. We’ve stumbled upon some rare decor pieces including lamps, rugs and artefacts alongside easy-breezy clothes and striking jewellery that let us keep a bit of the susegad Goan wardrobe as we brunch in the city.

Studio Arpora

This gallery in Arpora is perfect if you want to quickly pick-up some art prints or home linen inspired by Goa. Saffron Wiehl’s love for the slow Goan life is evident in all her works and we dig every bit of this space that has art scattered on napkins, tea towels, pouches, wrapping papers and cushion covers. Did we also tell you that all these pretty souvenirs won’t cost a bomb either?
