Smokehouse Deli is celebrating five years of phenomenal success in the capital by opening its fifth outlet in Saket. Age has brought with it evolution, and this new outpost of the chain features new items on the menu, and a variation in the distinctive décor elements we’ve grown so accustomed to at SHD.

While I’m a huge fan of SHD’s modern interpretation of Indian kitsch, I’ve always been an even bigger fan of change. Saket’s deli is reminiscent of a cheerful tea estate mansion, with much more colour than its elder siblings. Unfortunately, situating a restaurant in a mall means that the surrounding sterile mall ambience seeps into even the chirpiest design. Personal prejudices aside, I’m excited to see a restaurant trying to grow, despite having the comfort blanket of having identified a formula that clearly works.

Another interesting tangent - the new SHD is encouraging communal dining via larger portions and sharing platters. Ask for the deceptively potent pineapple cocktail that comes in a satisfyingly large bowl, and allows you to replicate the two straws and one drink romance perpetuated by Archie Andrews. Also excellent, {though sadly only portioned for one} is the New Fashioned, with heavy berry influences.

I’ve already written about how I think SHD’s Smoked Salmon and Philly Cream Cheese Omelette is god’s answer to every breakfast prayer. In terms of new menu items, I particularly liked the zingy Chicken and Lemongrass Skewers, and the spicy Grilled Sambal Prawn Skewers. If you’re really hungry, you want to order the substantial but subtle Chilli Crusted Cobbler with Turmeric Risotto, or the unabashed Beer and Cheese Burger.

The staff is responsive and well-acquainted with the menu, and can help you out if you get lost in all the deliciousness.
